Biz, Sports: “Phil Mickelson, what’s next for you?” “I’m buying a Waffle House!”

  • Tending to his wife The last six weeks saw Phil Mickelson far away from golf, tending to his wife Amy and his mom, who have both been fighting cancer. He’s glad to be back at it again. “We’ve had a great six weeks,” he said. “We’re in a much better place now than we were. I’m excited about that. I’m excited about the chance to play a little golf, too.”
  • Tending to his waffles While his mind’s been off the golf links, his mind’s apparently been on sausage links. Tiger’s greatest foe is part of a group looking to buy SouthEast Waffles, a bankrupt franchisee of 105 Waffle House restaurants. One of his partners was CEO of the company that makes the VeggieTales series. Seriously. We can’t make this up. source

  • Don’t fake+bake guys. Cancer researchers now have proof that radiation is carcinogenic – which isn’t so awesome. This puts it among the ranks of tobacco, chimney sweeping and all those fun and healthy things that are definite causes of cancer. No big deal, orange was so last year anyway. source

Culture, Music: “Idol” champ David Cook wins the “bravest person” award

  • I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor, and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.
  • “Amercian Idol” winner David Cook • At D.C.’s Race for Hope 5K, which he was grand-marshaling the day after his brother Adam died. Adam, who was married with a family, had been fighting brain cancer for a decade. As you might expect, he fought back tears when saying this. This makes us really sad. :( • source

U.S.: Cut cholesterol and keep your prostate cancer-free, all at once!

  • Researchers say statin drugs help old dudes in more ways than one. In a test of 2,447 older men, research showed that just 6% of all men using statin drugs, already shown to help prevent heart disease, got prostrate cancer. On the other hand, those who didn’t take statin drugs were three times more likely to get it. The rates are still preliminary, and more testing will be needed to confirm the claims, but hooray for research! source

Culture: Brit reality celeb Jade Goody loses her battle with cancer

  • A public life Goody first became a fixture in the British press – specifically the British tabloid press – after starring on the British version of “Big Brother” in 2002. Goody took advantage of her notoriety by marketing the heck out of her public image. She took a PR hit in 2007 after making racist remarks on the celebrity edition of “Big Brother” but managed to recover to some degree.
  • A public death After joining the Indian edition of “Big Brother” in 2008 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2008. She found it was terminal weeks ago, and lived out the last few weeks of her life very publicly, including getting married in a big spectacle. She claimed she was doing it to raise money for her daughter. Goody died today in her sleep. She was 27. source
