World: Even if appetite sizes don’t shrink, candy bars in the U.K. might

As one way to target the obesity crisis, candy bars and soda cans may come in smaller sizes in the U.K., in hopes that smaller sizes become standard. source

World: China has crazy greenhouse gas stats up the yin-yang

Britain emits a lot of greenhouse gas but, according to Greenpeace, China’s *three* biggest power firms emit even more. That is FREAKY. source

World: Britain sez its plan to smoke out the Taliban is working great

  • They’re out of many parts of Afghanistan now. Britain and NATO launched this endeavor called Operation Panther’s Claw a while back to clear out Taliban influence from Afghanistan’s southern Helmand Province in an effort to allow people in those areas to vote in next month’s presidential election. Today, they report success. According to the top guy for the British operation, Brigadier Tim Radford, “Panther’s Claw has been extremely successful. There will be many Taliban who will not be fighting any more.” While saying that Taliban casualties were significant, they didn’t give a specific number. source

World: So much for avoiding a diplomatic crisis with the UK, Iran

  • They’re going to try those British embassy staffers. WTF? Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati (who, for a frame of reference, is this guy) announced the news today during prayer services. “And then some people in the UK embassy,” he said, “who had a hand in the disturbances, were arrested and will surely be put on trial.” The UK is pissed; the European Union plans to show solidarity in getting Iran to let go of those diplomats. And everyone else in the world is trying to tell Iran that they can’t shift the blame this time. source

World: Iran’s attempts to graft outside influence on the protests continue

  • Yesterday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad offered a scathing rebuke of U.S. President Barack Obama for giving support to protesters. The Iranian president played like Obama was meddling; the GOP wishes Obama would a little more.
  • And today, the British government’s escalating tensions with the country hit a head when Iran arrested nine embassy employees in Tehran. Foreign Secretary David Miliband was not very happy with this at all.

World: Gordon Brown’s Labour Party support just dipped in the negative

  • Can we get unity under the current leadership? I am not sure that we can and I think we need to debate it urgently and I think probably it will need a change in leader.
  • Charles Falconer • A former senior Labour Party official, on the uphill battle Prime Minister Gordon Brown faces in the U.K. Election results for the European Parliament are expected to be brutal today for the ruling party, caught up in scandal and facing criticism about a lack of a coherent policy agenda. And Brown, the guy on top, has felt it the worst, losing half a dozen cabinet members this week alone. • source

World: British prime minister Gordon Brown has like zero support

  • I now believe your continued leadership makes a Conservative victory more, not less likely. That would be disastrous for our country.
  • Work and Sensions Secretary James Purnell • Who, in a very harshly-written letter to the media, asked Gordon Brown to resign. If it were just Purnell doing this, it’d be a big deal, but he’s only the fifth Labour Party member to resign from Brown’s government this week. WTF dude? Can’t you keep it together? Need a hug or something? Labour Party support is at historic lows, BTW. • source

U.S.: Two nuclear subs get a little close for comfort

  • Both submarines remained safe and no injuries occurred. We can confirm that the capability remained unaffected and there has been no compromise to nuclear safety.
  • First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Jonathan Band • on a British nuclear submarine hitting a French nuclear submarine earlier this month. Maybe that shouldn’t happen ever again, guys. They are called “nuclear” subs for a reason. • source
