Tech: Not even Apple Stores in nice ‘hoods are safe from shootings

  • But … but … this is where we bought our iPhone! An Apple Store in Arlington, Va. (where literally, we bought our iPhone) was the scene of a random shooting. An employee was injured after a man came into the store and attacked the woman. The area it happened, so posh that a popular YouTube video makes fun of how street it isn’t, was such an unlikely spot for a shooting or robbery that customers thought boxes were falling down. On the plus side, the store was packed but the employee was the only one hurt. source

Biz, Tech: Yo, Steve Jobs: Welcome back to Apple, brah!

  • Not much has changed since you left. The iPhone got a little faster, that single-body 13″ aluminum MacBook is called a Pro (and now has a Firewire port) and you have a new liver. Sounds about right.source

Biz, Tech: Warren Buffett thinks Steve Jobs shoulda said he was having surgery

  • If I have any serious illness, or something coming up of an important nature, an operation or anything like that, I think the thing to do is just tell – the Berkshire shareholders about it. I work for them.
  • Warren Buffett • On what he would’ve done if he was having the kind of surgery Steve Jobs did. Jobs needed a liver transplant and got one back in April. But the world didn’t know about it until just the other day. Not that Apple particularly missed him: Their stock is up 60% this year, most of which he’s been out on medical leave. • source

Tech: Apple is really sorry that you can’t activate your iPhone. Here’s $30.

  • Since Friday’s launch of the iPhone 3GS, the activation process has been spotty at best and completely unusable at worst. It’s not as bad as last year, when the servers completely crashed on people wanting to activate an iPhone 3G. source
  • To make up for the torrent of new iPhone activations (500,000 by one analyst’s count), Apple is making it up to users by offering a $30 iTunes Store credit to those stuck without a working phone for the weekend. Aww, how nice. source

Tech: Available options for enabling tethering on your AT&T iPhone

  • According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog (where friend of the site Megan Lavey works), AT&T plans to offer a super-expensive $55 data plan to allow you to use the iPhone’s 3G on your laptop. Laaaaaaaaame.
  • According to 9to5Mac (where, sadly, no friends of the site work), you can hack your 3.0-upgraded iPhone using some simple non-jailbreaking steps to enable tethering in five minutes. Guess which one we’re doing?

Biz, Tech: The guy behind the iPod and Pre is now Palm’s CEO

  • Jon Rubinstein has a pretty golden touch. Hired at Apple during the company’s dark ages, he devised some of their best products as their hardware chief, including masterminding the iPod, which was a massive success. He retired in 2005 only to get courted by Palm two years later. The fruit of his labor? The Pre, which is off to a decent start. Now he’s the CEO. Go figure. source
