Politics: The stupidest quote we’ve ever seen on friendship, ever

  • Parents sometimes say Johnny needs that one special friend. We say he doesn’t need a best friend.
  • School counselor Christine Laycob • On fighting the tide of human nature, which emphasizes that Tango needs his very own Cash. Instead, Laycob says that it’s better that kids have groups of friends who meet at specified times for playdates. Dear Ms. Laycob: Let kids be kids! Don’t force modest, superficial relationships on people over real ones with real emotions! Can’t you just sit in an office all day and be useless like most school counselors? You make it seem like close relationships are awful ideas. source

Politics: NAACP takes the PETA route to irrelevancy, apparently

  • A talking greeting card that is clearly labeled as being about space used the phrase “black holes.” The NAACP for some reason thought it sounded like something else. Now they want a formal apology. Dudes, do you remember why people laugh at PETA? It’s because of stuff like this. You guys have a stellar reputation. Why waste it on stuff like this? To its credit, Hallmark pulled the card, despite the fact that they had a pretty sound case for ignoring the claim. source

Tech: Dear Phil Corbett: Shut up and let us tweet in peace. OK?

  • Some social-media fans may disagree, but outside of ornithological contexts, ‘tweet’ has not yet achieved the status of standard English. And standard English is what we should use in news articles.
  • New York Times standards editor Phil Corbett • For some reason fighting the flow of the English language, which has already decided to call Twitter posts “tweets” (lowercase). Corbett calls the word “inherently silly” and says it’s possible people may not even be using the site in a year. OK, this would be fine if he had any good recommendations. But what does he come up with? “But let’s look for deft, English alternatives: use Twitter, post to or on Twitter, write on Twitter, a Twitter message, a Twitter update. Or, once you’ve established that Twitter is the medium, simply use ‘say’ or ‘write.’ ” In other words, he has no good ideas for what to call this thing that he’s railing against. How about we call it “tweet,” Phil? Seems like a reasonable name. It also seems dumb for a guy who uses “ornithological” to complain about the clarity of language.  source

Culture: Dear Justin Bieber fans: You’re pawns in a viral marketing campaign

  • Justin Bieber should buy @twitter make it #BieberTwitter and then say “Who owns now bitch?” ;D
  • A Tweeter who goes by the name @BiebsOrDie • Regarding her mission, and the mission of teenage girls everywhere: Get Justin Bieber in the Twitter trending topics somehow. They’ve been doing everything in their power to make it happen, much to the frustration of people who simply want the trending topics to provide relevant information (a fact we noted on Twitter earlier today). The thing is, these teenage girls are really just vectors for the music industry. Twitter has to figure out a way to filter its results better. source

Music: An open letter to the band New Politics on your advertising

  • Look guys, we know. Getting attention is tough, and you want people to listen to your band. But this ad has seriously been everywhere this week (including on this site), and is annoying as heck because, even if you roll over it by accident, you can’t turn it off. So we have no choice but to tell people not to listen to this band. You heard it here first, kids: New Politics sucks. source

Culture: James Bond’s calm demeanor tested by MGM’s cloudy future

  • The next “Bond” film is on pause due to its studio. OK, we admit it – we freaking love Daniel Craig as Bond. He’s like the best James Bond ever (sorry Sean Connery), so it saddens us to read that the next film in the series is in purgatory because MGM can’t find a buyer. The film series has reached new heights with Craig as star – his first “Bond” film, “Casino Royale,” was the most popular in the series’ history. Why would anyone hold 007 back? source
