U.S.: Here’s a random awesome shot from the White House

  • We seriously hope that every president considers doing like the White House Flickr feed in the future. (In this pic, he’s talking to a bunch of advisers about Afghanistan. We will say this much: It’s telling that only one of them is female.) You feel like you’re really on the inside with these photos. And they make a great document for future generations. Isn’t it great that we have a president who gets social media?source

U.S., World: The 2016 Olympics are not a lock for Chicago, guys

  • This is a very, very close race between four outstanding bids. Because the bids are so good and because it is so close the last few hours are going to be even more exciting than usual.
  • Sir Craig Reedie • A British International Olympic Committee representative, describing the competition between Chicago, which is slightly favored, and the three other bids: Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Chicago is a world-class city, but so are the other three. But Chicago has Obama coming in to rep, and everybody (not on the right) loooooooooooooooves Obama. They’ll name the winner on Friday. • source

U.S.: Dying on the vine in the Senate: Health care’s public option

  • Remember that Senate vote yesterday? It flopped. Hard. For many, the public option is the crux of the health care debate. But in the Senate Finance Committee, amendments to add a public option couldn’t get enough votes to be added to Sen. Max Baucus’ health care bill. “No one has been able to show me how we can count up to 60 votes with a public option,” Baucus said. On a side note, The Onion conveniently created this article (language NSFW) for conservatives to bring up in this debate. source

U.S., World: It’s finally official, guys: Canada is now a part of the U.S.

  • For the stimulus plan, “Buy American” can mean Canada, too. The White House will reportedly exempt our neighbors up north from the stimulus provision which favors buying American-made products. It had become a sore spot in Canuck-American trade relations, eh? source

U.S.: Najibullah Zazi’s attorney says he sees a “rush to judgment”

  • I’d like to stop this rush to judgment because what I’ve seen so far does not amount to a conspiracy charge.
  • Defense Attorney J. Michael Dowling • On his client, Najibullah Zazi, who has been charged with plotting a terrorist attack in New York City. He’s being held without bail. Although it’s obvious that Dowling would say this about his client, he argues that there’s not a lot meat to the bones of the charges. “I don’t know the names of anybody else that allegedly conspired with Mr. Zazi,” Dowling said. “Those names have not been produced.”  • source
