U.S.: Furlough funday: 150,000 state workers in California are screwed

  • They’re caught in the middle of California’s never-ending budget fight. After a lengthy court battle as part of the seemingly-yearly budget deadlock that comes up in California, the California Supreme Court allowed governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to force a three-day-a-month furlough on state government employees. By the way, Schwarzenegger and the legislature have yet to decide on how to solve the state’s $19.1 billion budget deficit. Nice to see the people in the middle get screwed. source

U.S.: Stupid punk iPad robbery/amputation suspect fails at plotting hits

  • awful The suspect in a Colorado iPad robbery, Brandon Darnell Smith, apparently pulled so hard that he ripped the victim’s pinky to the bone, later causing it to be amputated. the Which is unspeakably awful.
  • dumb Smith, who’s been in jail ever since, tried to send a letter to a friend ordering a hit on the victim. “I really need this otherwise it’s a wrap!! If you do this, case is dropped,” he wrote. That’s not how the criminal system works, idiot. source

BP, because they’ve bungled just about everything else related to the oil spill, has apparently bungled the claims process, too, with some people pretending to be fishermen just to get some money from the company. But it goes both ways – some con artists have pretended to be BP employees to scam people deserving of money. Note: People suck sometimes. source

U.S.: Driver behind crazy off-road accident is really, really sorry

  • Offroad driver Brett Sloppy • Talking on his Facebook page about the fatal incident that he was involved in on Saturday. In the incident, his vehicle (a large truck) veered towards a crowd of spectators, and the resulting crash killed eight. Sloppy survived and wasn’t even injured by the accident, which he wasn’t charged for. source
