Biz, Tech: Messing with GPS: Google is no longer friends with TomTom

  • There’s no doubt that those guys are going to be disrupted.
  • Opus Research analyst Greg Sterling • On Google’s decision to offer free navigation software for mobile phones, essentially taking the GPS navigation abilities of TomTom and Garmin and making them look expensive and useless. Google does this a lot, and it has the effect of creating animosity in certain industries. For his part, Google CEO Eric Schmidt says he doesn’t see it as disruption, just helping consumers: “Obviously we like the price of free because consumers like that as well.” • source

Tech: Reddit’s founders cashing out, leaving the company

  • When Alexis and I started reddit, we had no idea what we were in for. Reddit took on a life of its own early and continues to surprise me on a daily basis. I am genuinely proud to have been a part of it, and humbled by what it has become.
  • Steve “spez” Huffman • Describing his reasons for leaving Reddit, the site he started with Alexis “kn0thing” Ohanian in 2005. The founders had a contract with Condé Nast to stay on for a specified period. Now that the period is over, they’re out. Later core team member Christopher Slowe’s contract is up too, but he’s staying on to help. Huffman notes that the site is in good hands even without its founders. It’s sad – Reddit’s a pretty awesome site – but the community is strong, so it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. • source

Tech: Give Jason Scott a high-five for his hard work saving Geocities

  • You’re stupid and I hate you. I haven’t even met you, don’t even know where you are or what else you do, and I hate you. … This has to have been one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done, and it’s your fault.
  • Geocities archivist Jason Scott • On his frustration with Yahoo over their closing of the iconic site. He notes the company’s shortsightedness in taking a historic service and throwing it out the window – and worse, not helping Scott’s Archive Team with the process. The message, in our view is epic and vitriolic. As it should be. Our favorite part: “So now in two days you’re going to shut this place down, this collection of genealogy and pages by people who’ve died and collections of writing and art and music and you’re going to turn it into dust because Carol Bartz said Yahoo needed to save a few bucks.” Throw this guy $25 so he can keep doing what he’s doing. He deserves it. • source

Tech: Goodbye, Geocities: XKCD commemorates the death of a net icon

XKCD redesign
  • This is how Geocities should be remembered: An ugly piece of crap, but our ugly piece of crap. Not specifically ours, but the Internet’s. Yahoo’s biggest financial folly and the reason why we still fear for the futures of our good, not-awful friends Flickr and Delicous. But an essential reminder of the anyone-can-screw-with-it nature of what makes the Web awesome. Good show, XKCD.source

Tech: Twitter gets rid of one of its peskiest, most annoying problems

  • If you delete a tweet, people can no longer find it. It was one of Twitter’s greatest, if not most obvious flaws. If you screwed up, thanks to the search results, your screw-up was encased in amber for the rest of eternity, or at least until everyone forgot about it. This created one notable/infamous incident, where ABC’s Terry Moran mentioned that Obama called Kanye West a “jackass,” then deleted the tweet – even though everyone could still see it. Fortunately, Twitter has finally fixed the problem. Despite that, you probably shouldn’t trust Twitter to delete your old tweets for good. source

Tech: Daily poll: The link between cancer and cell phone usage

  • Word on the street is that the World Health Organization is about to release a report linking long-term cell phone usage to higher levels of certain kinds of cancer. The study recommends restricting – but not banning – usage for children, and perhaps investing in some sort of hands-free setup. Which leads to the question – would you cut back on heavy cell phone usage if you knew it was cancerous? It seems that, unlike cigarettes, they have an essential use, so we couldn’t seem them going away. But what do you think? Vote above.source

Tech: Meet the world’s most famous Drupal-based site: Whitehouse.Gov

whitehouse1025
  • Well, that certainly helps with open government. The White House uses the same technology that many huge Web sites use (along with our bros at Bluffton Today, where we worked in our formative years). Drupal’s open source. Now, so is Whitehouse.gov. This is cool, kids.source
