Politics, Sports: PETA should have leveraged Michael Vick, but they didn’t

  • For all the good they’ve done, PETA has a way of alienating itself from the general public. And there is no group of people that is more ‘general public’ than football fans.
  • 24SevenCities blogger Jesse Scaccia • Discussing PETA’s current role in the Michael Vick saga. Rather than be willing to forgive and leverage Vick’s role in what happened, they released this cutting quote: “PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water.” We’re with Jesse: Longtime vegetarian, in favor of many of the beliefs they espouse. But they could have leveraged Vick as a huge media opportunity. • source

Sports: The Eagles have landed … Michael Vick. Wait, what?

  • Is Donovan McNabb not doing it anymore? The Philadelphia Eagles were the winners of the nab-Michael-Vick contest, which is surprising because they already have a really good quarterback in the thrower spot already. The Eagles gave the suspended Vick a two-year contract, although Vick won’t be able to help them until Roger Goodell gives the OK to let him play in a regular-season game. That won’t come until at least October, if at all. Either way, look for him to play in the final two games of the preseason. source

Sports: Sex, abortion, extortion: Rick Pitino’s got a mess on his hands

  • Several months ago Coach Pitino informed me about the alleged extortion attempt. I’ve now been informed that there may be other details which, if true, I find surprising. My thoughts are with Coach Pitino and his family.
  • University of Louisville President James Ramsey • Regarding the bizarre mess his star basketball coach, Rick Pitino, has found himself in. Pitino himself is actually clean and hasn’t been charged with a crime. But Karen Sypher, a waitress at a Louisville restaurant, allegedly had sex with him (which Pitino admits), forced him to pay for an abortion for her, and – years later – tried to extort him by alleging rape charges against him. You know, pretty much the kind of thing you don’t want to have spill out into the press. Best of luck, Rick – it sounds like you’ve got a lot to deal with at the moment. • source

Sports: It looks like Michael Vick’s jail time didn’t turn off potential teams

  • I don’t know where he’s gonna end up. I can’t tell you which teams, but I know there’s at least five.
  • A source familiar with the situation • Regarding Michael Vick’s chances of getting signed. Something tells us that teams are totally willing to live with a guy who spent a while in jail for dog fighting if he can get stuff done. So, expect Vick to be on a team’s roster this season. • source

Sports: Ben Wallace grovels his way back to the Pistons fold

  • In a classic bad career move, Detroit’s biggest star, Ben Wallace, takes a massive payday from Pistons’ biggest rival, the Chicago Bulls. He quickly declines. source
  • After spending time sucking for two different teams, Wallace re-signs with the Pistons for the veterans’ minimum. He didn’t completely burn the bridge. source

Sports: Prince Fielder’s clubhouse tirade was kinda understandable

  • He’s been hit a lot. … He doesn’t like it when somebody does it on purpose. I don’t blame him. … This type of mentality puts everybody in jeopardy. Giving a guy a $500 fine and two-game suspension isn’t enough. This type of stuff should be cleaned up.
  • Milwaukee Brewers Manager Ken Macha • Regarding his star hitter, Prince Fielder, and the tirade he was involved in on Tuesday night. Fielder, after getting beaned with a baseball by Guillermo Mota, attempted to enter the L.A. Dodgers clubhouse to attack him. It’s not the first time Mota’s been involved in this kind of brawl because of a noggin-knocking pitch. In 2003, he did something similar to Mike Piazza, who reacted similarly. • source

Sports: Steve McNair will be ever-present for the Titans this season

  • His number, 9, will adorn the team’s helmets this year. The Tennessee Titans, still reeling from the loss of their most iconic player, will use their helmets to remember him (among other ways). The back-of-the-helmet decals will definitely help keep his memory alive for many. But it’s his loss – a shocking death in a murder-suicide – that’s still fresh in the minds of many. source

Biz, Sports: “Phil Mickelson, what’s next for you?” “I’m buying a Waffle House!”

  • Tending to his wife The last six weeks saw Phil Mickelson far away from golf, tending to his wife Amy and his mom, who have both been fighting cancer. He’s glad to be back at it again. “We’ve had a great six weeks,” he said. “We’re in a much better place now than we were. I’m excited about that. I’m excited about the chance to play a little golf, too.” source

  • Tending to his waffles While his mind’s been off the golf links, his mind’s apparently been on sausage links. Tiger’s greatest foe is part of a group looking to buy SouthEast Waffles, a bankrupt franchisee of 105 Waffle House restaurants. One of his partners was CEO of the company that makes the VeggieTales series. Seriously. We can’t make this up. source
