Politics: Howard Kurtz impressed he was the center of attention for an hour

  • Within a few hours of Tuesdays announcement, a Politico reporter told me she was working on a second-day story. And by late afternoon, media columnists were already drawing up lists of who might replace me at The Post. I was old news, just like that.
  • Howard “quitting after 29 years” Kurtz • In his “I’m leaving” announcement on his Washington Post blog this morning. Kurtz was in disbelief that his departure actually led to his name briefly becoming a trending topic on Twitter yesterday “without even popping off, Rick Sanchez-style.” He claimed that he was departing because he found the ability to help mold the new-media landscape “irresistible.” We’ll see what the dude can do with The Daily Beast’s Washington bureau. It might be cool. source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell’s iconic ad met with iconic response

  • Reaction time is getting quicker. A day after O’Donnell’s attempt at an iconic “see, I’m not so bad” ad, her Delaware Senate opponent, Chris Coons, has gone on the attack, producing a well-timed response site, which is pretty much the exact reaction Coons should use here. Points for good timing and correct tone. source

Politics: “Parker Spitzer” drops like a bomb onto CNN’s pathetic ratings

  • See that look on Eliot Spitzer’s face? It’s the look of a guy who had a really crappy night. Sure he’s smiling, but that’s because he’s contractually obligated to smile. He knows that if this doesn’t work, he doesn’t have much else to fall back on. (Kathleen Parker should be good no matter what happens, honestly.) Too bad the first-day ratings don’t support his long-term future. The show reached 457,000 last night, far behind every other news channel. Even Nancy Grace beat “Parker Spitzer.” To put this into perspective, the last big premiere at CNN’s 8 p.m. slot, Campbell Brown, drew three times those ratings. Ouch. Good luck, bro. source

  • now Republican Joe Miller of Alaska claims unemployment benefits are not “constitutionally authorized.”
  • then 2002, Miller’s wife was laid off  from the government job he got her, and received unemployment benefits. source

Politics: Conundrum: Howard Kurtz hates SEO, likes The Daily Beast

  • Howard Kurtz, about a month ago Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz puts up a rant complaining about how he has to do SEO to get people to read his articles: “Our mission – and we have no choice but to accept it – is to grab some of that traffic that could otherwise end up at hundreds of other places, even blogs riffing off the reporting that your own publication has done.”
  • Howard Kurtz, right about now His dislike of SEO isn’t enough to make him pass up The Daily Beast: “I’ve wanted to work with Tina Brown forever—well, for a long time—and I’m incredibly impressed by the energy and creativity of The Daily Beast staff. After a lifetime in newspapers, I’m ready for the challenge of fast-paced online journalism.” source

Politics: US Senate candidate denies being a witch

  • Christine O’Donnell is just like you! At least, that’s the theme of her newest ad. She’s had a rough time since winning the Delaware Senate primary, with a seemingly endless supply of self-incriminating quotes surfacing week after week. With her latest ad, she clears things up: just because you dabble into witchcraft, that doesn’t automatically make you a witch. Our feeling is that as soon as a politician has to speak the phrase, “I’m not a witch” in order to improve their PR, that politician probably isn’t going to get elected. source

Politics: O RLY? Tea Party, Religious Right have a little overlap apparently

  • 11% of Americans (in this study) say they party like tea
  • 22% of those polled say that they’re part of the Religious Right – double the Tea Party
  • 55% of Tea Partiers say that the U.S. is a Christian nation – more than Christian conservatives
  • 56% of Tea Partiers prefer Fox News – versus 39 percent for Christian conservatives source
  • » Where should the government step in? While Tea Partiers are notably anti-government, the study shows that they are looking for some government intervention on social issues such as abortion. Overall, though, the two somewhat disparate groups can agree on a couple of things, despite their differences. “They know what they can agree on, which is what they’re against: Obama, Pelosi,” said George Mason University public policy professor Mark Rozell.

Politics: Rahm Emanuel pretending to listen to Chicago residents today

  • You are going to be asked some hardball questions and get your bat out. Welcome to Chicago.
  • Chicago resident Paul Johnson • Offering up some pretty necessary advice for our boy Rahm Emanuel, who’s working on his Chicago mayoral campaign as we speak. There are some residency issues that the Rahmster is currently trying to work out, and he’s in town as part of a campaign to shore up his lived-here-all-my-life credentials. “The Board of Elections will decide this, that’s the proper place,” Emanuel said. “So in the next five, six weeks, let’s have a debate about these issues that the residents of Chicago care about, not my residency.” Should be fun to see if it actually plays out that way. source

Politics: Dale Peterson: Officially the Ernest P. Worrell of Republican politics

  • So what if Dale Peterson didn’t win his primary for Alabama agriculture commissioner? He has a far more interesting gig. He’s taking his aw-shucks uber-Republican politics on the road to other states – this one, for the Georgia gubernatorial race, is designed in such a way that if it gets 100,000 views, it’ll get upgraded from YouTube to actually air on TV. It’s only halfway there after about a week and a half, but considering there’s a whole month until the election, he might just pull it off. Here’s another ad he did. After this, he should start selling milk.

Politics: Jon Stewart, Christine O’Donnell combined into one quote

  • They’ll think somehow that that will resonate with voters, that 20 years ago Christine O’Donnell on MTV said ‘Masturbation is a sin.’ And they’ll play it, and they’ll ridicule it, and the voters will be like, ‘Yeah, I don’t have a job.’ That’s how they’ll blow it.
  • Jon “I’ve been in the news a lot lately” Stewart • Making a key point about another person who’s been in the news a lot lately, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell, during a NPR interview. We can’t find any fault in his warning to Democrats, really. In other Stewart news, the dude apparently got an apology from Rick Sanchez today. In other Christine O’Donnell news, she released her first full campaign ad today, and it’s very apologetic about her various weird statements in the ’90s. In other other Christine O’Donnell news, Bill Maher is really pissed that she hasn’t gone on his show. “It hurt me. It hurt me very deeply,” Maher said. “I don’t like it when people forget who they’re friends are, you know, who they started out with.” Oh, and there’s also this. Wait, that’s only from 2006! And it has nothing to do with the culture wars! source
