Politics: Three reasons Clarence Thomas’ wife is bad for Clarence Thomas

  • one Virginia Thomas works at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that suggested appointees for Bush while the 2000 election was contested.
  • two She’s already a well-known figure among conservative activists, and now heads a new Tea-Partyish, anti-Obama nonprofit called Liberty Central.
  • three There’s no word on where the sizable funding for the organization, which she hopes “will be bigger than the Tea Party movement,” has come from. source
  • » What this means for Clarence Thomas: He may have to recuse himself from a number of politically-oriented cases because of his wife’s extracurricular activities, which, as a private citizen, she’s totally allowed to do. If Liberty Central were to take off, it could be a glaring conflict of interest for the court’s most conservative judge.

Politics: Parallels: Obama’s careening to midterms just like Ronald Reagan

  • reaganHaving inherited a recession and sporting a 10.4 percent jobless rate, the GOP managed to only lose 24 seats in the House and hold a 54-seat majority in the Senate during the 1982 midterms.
  • obama Under similar circumstances – and a much lower jobless rate – many analysts are predicting that Dems will lose the House and may lose the Senate come November. How about that for parallels? source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell’s second campaign ad: Just like the first

  • Yeah yeah, she didn’t go to Yale, she isn’t perfect, but this seems a lot more calculated the second time around. If you’re going to take this approach, you should change it up slightly so that people don’t tire of the message. We liked the conceit of it better the first time. Now it feels like formula. By the way, she’s down in the polls by nearly 20 points. source

Politics: So, anti-immigration firebrand Lou Dobbs is a hypocrite

  • hm… Lou Dobbs basically built his career with CNN on his anger over immigration issues.
  • hmm… Dobbs, who dramatically quit his job last year, may be planning an electoral run soon.
  • hmmm…
The Nation found out that he has a bunch of illegal workers on his property. Uh-oh. source

Politics: White House, Hillary Clinton deny job-swapping rumors

  • denial Robert Gibbs had this to say about Bob Woodward’s vice president rumors: “It’s just not true, It is not anything that is being discussed here.” He added that Obama is very happy with Joe Biden as his vice president.
  • denial Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton added this rebuttal to the record (while noting they were all very busy people): “I have absolutely no interest and no reason for doing anything other than just dismissing these stories and moving on.” source

Politics: If you haven’t seen the Donald Duck/Glenn Beck mashup yet …

  • The creator of this new classic has earned a full-on scornful reaction from Glenn Beck, who says that it’s “some of the best well-made propaganda I have ever seen.” And it is well-made. We disagree on the propaganda part. We think it’s less an attempt to attack Beck and more an attempt to make us question the political climate as a whole. Beck is just the easiest example of how this works. There’s no reason the creator couldn’t have used Hannity or Maddow or anyone else, left or right. The point is not simply the message, but the way that one hears and instantly accepts the message. To us, all this clip is saying is to remain skeptical of and diversify your sources of information. Just for sake of contrarian value, here’s the D.C. Examiner’s take, which is essentially that we should be questioning the politicians, not the talk-radio blabbers. source

Politics: Feds issue fresh subpoenas in John Edwards sex scandal

  • bad John Edwards has spent the last couple of years attempting to move on after a very public love-child scandal. It hasn’t been so easy for him.
  • worse Federal investigators are still on the case, issuing subpoenas to see if he used campaign funds to pay for Rielle Hunter’s love nest. So yeah, it could get worse. source

Politics, U.S.: National Rifle Association endorses Dems, angers Repubs

  • 14 Democrats in competitive districts endorsed by the NRA source
  • » The National Rifle Association normally breaks for the Republicans. However, they have an endorsement policy that’s giving insurgent GOP candidates a headache: if the incumbent and challenger in an election are equally gun-friendly, the NRA will endorse the incumbent. The GOP hopes to win seats from moderate Democrats in conservative districts; however, since those Democrats are incumbents who support gun rights, they’ll be the ones receiving the NRA’s support. The result? Republican challengers who could benefit most from the NRA’s endorsement won’t be getting it.

Politics, U.S.: The most unenthusiastic endorsement possible

  • We have a constitutional requirement for somebody that’s gonna run for President. Of course, [Sarah Palin]’s qualified.
  • Senate Candidate Joe Miller •  When asked by Megyn Kelly whether or not Palin is qualified to be President. He’d earlier refused to answer the question, prompting an angry e-mail from Todd Palin. source

Politics: Bob Woodward’s Obama/Clinton 2012 talk perks up some ears

  • Perhaps they should’ve done this back in 2008. Nothing against Biden – he’s not a bad VP even with his occasional gaffes – but it might have made it easier on the White House. See, if Hillary were VP, it’d be much harder for critics to pin all of the country’s weaknesses on Obama. Hillary Clinton should also run in 2016 no matter what happens, because she’ll probably win. Even with the frustrations some have with the Obama administration, one person who’s come out ahead is Clinton. She still looks good. source
