Offbeat, U.S.: Dutch journos can handle war zones, car jackings in Detroit

  • They were doing a report on the city. Reporter Jacqueline Maris, who works for VPRO, The Netherlands’ national public radio, and freelance photographer Daimon Xanthopoulos have been to scary parts of Africa and the Middle East on stories, but they got a Motor City welcome in Detroit when their rental car got jacked at gunpoint last week. The car was recovered later that day. Despite this, they still see positive signs in the city, people making things better, beyond what Maris called “those stupid criminals.” source

Offbeat, Tech: Being on disability ≠ being on Facebook all day

  • A guy in British Columbia is getting his PC checked for FB usage. The guy, Brendon Bishop, is asking for permanent disability payments, claiming that a 2005 car crash made him too fatigued to work. But a ton of wall posts and pokes and Scrabulous games apparently claim otherwise, as the judge in his trial agreed to a defense motion asking for a scan of his social-networking usage. Someone’s totally getting defriended. source

Music, Offbeat: Here’s more on PETA’s latest crazy campaign that won’t work

  • We have a request that may at first seem bizarre, but we hope that after considering the following facts, you will understand why we are asking this of you: will you please consider changing your name from the Pet Shop Boys to the Rescue Shelter Boys?
  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals • In a letter to the Pet Shop Boys, hoping to convince them to change their name to something less pet-shoppy. Offbeat, U.S.: He wanted concert tix, so he confessed to witnessing a murder

  • They jumped him, tied him up. Everyone was like throwing eggs and stuff at him and burning him with cigarettes and just giving this guy back what he’s been giving us for all those years.
  • “Carl” • Who called a Phoenix radio station Wednesday night that was having a confession contest to win concert tickets. He said he witnessed his friends kill a bully in the Cincinatti area in 1988 when he was a teen. The FBI is investigating his claims. “Carl,” by the way, asked for Kelly Clarkson tickets. • source

Offbeat: Two things you might want to do on Easter, together at last

  • A bar in Little Rock, Ark. will host services at a local bar on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Beer might be part of the menu, but they need to check out their liquor license. (Someone say BYOB?) source
  • It’s Easter this Sunday. So all you Christians who go to church once a year, why not fight the urge to not go and perhaps get a little tipsy at the same time? Jesus died for your sins; toast him! source

Culture, Offbeat: Jack Wrangler, 1946-2009: A contradiction of a human being

  • Before turning to gay porn, he started his career in a religiously-themed NBC TV series in the 1950s. source
  • Wrangler starred in some landmark 1970s porn movies. We’ll trust you to Wikipedia them yourselves, kids. source
  • Despite being openly gay, he married a woman named Margaret Whiting – a big-band-era pop singer – in 1995. source
  • Whiting is 22 years Wrangler’s senior – and he admitted being openly gay as recently as last year. That’s crazy. source
