Offbeat: Hipster doesn’t buy Hot Pockets with his food stamps, feels heat

He got heavily criticized because he’s a broke arty kid who doesn’t have many job prospects, lives in Baltimore (where unemployment is very high), and uses his food stamp money to buy rabbits to cook and eat, along with other foodie-type foods not generally associated with food stamps. Mak suggests the negative response to the story “reflects the larger race and class conflicts in this country – the underlying sentiment behind many people’s hatred toward artists is that art is purely the domain of the wealthy and the privileged.” Ah, hipsters.
