Culture: See what you did, guys? Now Susan Boyle’s all exhausted.

  • She is getting away from everyone. She’s receiving the best care possible. She needs time to sleep and eat and do the things that she found rather difficult last week.
  • Piers Morgan • A “Britain’s Got Talent” judge and a huge supporter of Susan Boyle, on her need to take a break. The weeks of tabloid pressure due to her status as unexpected superstar singer had finally gotten to Boyle, who apparently cracked and is in the hospital for exhaustion. We’re responsible for making her this big, guys. This is why we can’t have nice things! • source

Culture, Music: Hedonism hearsay: A roadie sez Jimi Hendrix was murdered

  • ‘I had to do it. Jimi was worth much more to me dead than alive. That son of a b*%^# was going to leave me. If I lost him, I’d lose everything.’
  • James ‘Tappy’ Wright • A roadie for Jimi Hendrix, reciting what manager Michael Jeffery supposedly told him – that he killed Jimi because he was about to leave for a different manager. You should always take claims of things that happened 38 years ago with a grain of salt, especially when tied to a book (“Rock Roadie,” written by Wright), and written about by Robert Gibbs’ least favorite news resource, the British press. (It’s the Daily Mail, though. They’ll say anything, right?) • source

Culture, Offbeat: How a kid somehow built a career out of this stupid video

  • Brandon Hardesty translated the modest success of this video into a lucrative film career in just over two years. He now stars in “American Pie” sequels and Adam Sandler movies. We kid you not.source

Culture: We’re not talking about Jon & Kate’s marital problems, but …

  • … we will discuss their show’s child labor problems. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry is currently investigating the popular reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” as well as host network TLC, to determine whether the show is taking advantage of a bunch of young kids. Again, we don’t care about their marital problems. We’ll leave that for the tabloids. But a reality show overworking kids is a big deal. source

Culture: Dear U.K. citizens, you have no taste. Sincerely, Susan Boyle fans.

  • Second? WTF guys? Seriously? How? The public voted, and somehow, some way, the lady who seemed like a shoo-in to win “Britain’s Got Talent” fell to second, behind “Diversity,” a dance troupe who isn’t Susan Boyle. We call bull$*#^. By losing, Boyle lost a chance to sing for the Queen of England. It’s kind of terrible we have to say this about an entire country, but: Screw you all. There goes our chance at moving into diplomacy. source

Culture, Politics: We’re pretty “laodicean” about the National Spelling Bee

  • At some point, spelling became this national pasttime. Why? OK, we get it – education is important and athletics ultimately aren’t. And for some, seeing the National Spelling Bee become this big, all-caps EVENT is kind of a big deal. But we don’t agree. We have zero interest in seeing Kavya Shivashankar win the event spelling huge words like “laodicean.” We have even less interest in looking for drama to be found out of kids spelling big words. It seems like spelling shouldn’t play on the same type of field as football. We got 2nd place in our third-grade spelling bee. Maybe we’re bitter because of that. source

Culture, Politics: The Mancow waterboarding stunt was just that – a stunt

  • I know nothing about waterboarding. I had never done it before, I have no formal training in it, and I’ve never had it done to me. The only thing I knew was what I saw on the internet.
  • Klay South • The man who performed an act of “waterboarding” on Mancow. He said he faked it to raise money and gain publicity for his organization, Veterans of Valor, which helps wounded vets. Both he and radio host Mancow were very quick to admit that the whole thing was a hoax. Great job, guys! Maybe Keith should get back his money. • source

Culture: Key line from Jay Leno’s final “Tonight Show” monologue

  • When we started this show, my hair was black and the president was white. When we started the show, Jon and Kate were both eight.
  • Jay Leno • In his final “Tonight Show” appearance. He got a nice friendly dig in at his network, noting that “I’m going to be going to a secluded spot where no one can find me – NBC prime time.” On a side note, in case you’re wondering, we’ve been avoiding the Jon and Kate scandal on purpose – because we don’t give a crap. • source

Culture, Offbeat: Should Obama have the right to eat at greasy burger joints?

  • Why he should Because he’s American, and eating burgers and french fries with all the fixins chosen his way is the American way. And what better way to feed oneself than to do it at a greasy spoon? source

  • Why he shouldn’t Because he makes a scene every time he shows up at one in D.C. (in this case, Five Guys), which is kind of annoying. Today, he showed up with NBC news anchor Brian Williams. source

  • Our take Personally, we think it’d be awesome if Obama was a fan of a more obscure food dish, like Ethiopian cuisine. There’s a lot of Ethiopian restaurants in D.C. to check out, dude. source
