World: Americans win “World’s Funniest People” award…but is that a good thing?

  • americans are funny. At least, that was the conclusion drawn from a survey by social networking site Badoo (who?), in which 30,000 people in 15 countries were asked to name the world’s funniest citizens. Americans came out on top, with Spaniards and Italians taking second and third, respectively. But wait–what exactly did they mean by “funny?” Was it in a, “That joke was hilarious!” sort of way, or a “You have toilet paper stuck to your shoe and nobody’s telling you” sort of way? We don’t know, so we’re not sure whether or not Americans should rejoice at this news. Similarly, should Germany be proud or embarrassed that they came in dead last? source

Politics: Louisiana may have an oil spill off its coast; pending investigation

  • Coast guard investigating alleged oil spill: Stress the “alleged,” as a Coast Guard spokesman has said it’s “too early” to make a definitive judgment. That said, a fisherman reported what he thought to be an oil spill “several miles long” off the Louisiana coast near Venice, and the Coast Guard has deployed to ascertain whether the offending substance is indeed oil, and if so where it may have come from. For obvious reasons, oil turning up off the Louisiana coast reminds us of bad, bad things. We hope like crazy this turns out okay. source

Politics: “Opie and Anthony” show leaks a pic of Weiner’s penis from Breitbart’s phone

  • yesterday Andrew Breitbart detailed that while he had an extremely sexually explicit photo of Rep. Anthony Weiner, he had no intention of revealing it (unless Weiner attempted reprisals against him), displaying some respect during a rough time for the congressman.
  • today A picture of Anthony Weiner’s penis hit Twitter, snapped by radio host Greg Hughes (“Opie” of “Opie and Anthony”) when Breitbart showed it to him, unbeknownst to Breitbart. Protip: Don’t show sensitive photos to shock jocks, then get surprised that they “violated” your trust. source
  • UPDATE: The photo was not taken by Greg “Opie” Hughes via cell phone, but rather was a still from a video feed the show operates, which captured the image when Breitbart showed it. Seeing as the Opie and Anthony folks ran with it, however, and Breitbart flashed it in the first place (the stark opposite of what he’d said he’d do), the story is basically unchanged.

Politics: Rapper Ja Rule sentenced to two years in prison on handgun charges

  • Out on my patio having my last free moment I love all my fans Pain is love!!!
  • Ja Rule  • A tweet by the rapper/actor (real name Jeffrey Atkins) about ninety minutes prior to his being sentenced to two years in prison. In 2007, police found a hidden semi-automatic handgun in his car following a traffic stop, which landed him the charge. Incidentally, the line “Pain is love” is the title of one of his albums, with “Pain is Love 2” slated for release this summer — and that, friends, is commitment to marketing. He reportedly spent his last day of freedom watching the new X-Men movie with his family, and is expected to serve 18-20 months, pending good behavior. source

Politics: Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner’s wife, is pregnant

  • Okay, so this is pretty awkward timing, for obvious reasons. Knowing nothing of the private lives of these two (besides those things that both we and Anthony Weiner might rather he’d kept to himself), it’s probably safe to say that a major political and sexual scandal wasn’t their dream backdrop for ushering in this news. We’d be remiss not to say, though, what would be expected in most cases but may get drowned out due to the mess of “Weinergate” — congratulations to Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner on expecting their first child together. source

World: Are Syrian soldiers defecting instead of combating protests?

  • The Syrian army vs. security: It’s being reported that defections among soldiers in the Syrian military are on the rise, thanks in part to the grisly nature of the deeds they’re being asked to carry out. So says Human Rights Watch researcher Nadim Houry: “…in Daraa, for example, we know there have been some defections and in some cases some soldiers have come under fire from the security forces for defecting.” This allegation isn’t new; security forces have reportedly turned their guns on soldiers unwilling to shoot at civilians for some time now. (Warning: the source article features a graphically unpleasant image of a Syrian policeman who’s been shot dead.) source

Biz: Double-dip fuels fear of another Great Depression

  • 48% of people think another depression is coming source
  • » That’s the highest level ever. While the poll question (from a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll) had a slight majority — 51 percent — saying we probably won’t have one, a possible double-dip recession has many folks a little concerned. Obama promises that’s not going to happen. He better hope he’s right — 51 percent of people also said that the economy is extremely important in determining who they’ll vote for.

Tech: Nintendo – promising more than they can deliver?

  • excited Yesterday Nintendo announced a new console, and it seemed pretty awesome. From the touch screen controller to the HD graphics, the Wii U was proving itself to be a console that could compete. It was exciting seeing Nintendo stepping up to be a real competitor.
  • disappointed It seems that Nintendo used some footage from the competition during their press conference. Some of the games they showed weren’t from their new console, but from the current-gen Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Which is kind of embarrassing.  source

World: Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri eulogizes Osama bin Laden

  • The sheikh has departed, may God have mercy on him, to his God as a martyr and we must continue on his path of jihad to expel the invaders from the land of Muslims and to purify it from injustice.
  • Al-Qaeda’s second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahri • Eulogizing the death of Osama bin Laden in a recently-released 28-minute recording. He had some rough words for the U.S., too, obviously: “Today, and thanks be to God, America is not facing an individual or a group … but a rebelling nation which has awoken from its sleep in a jihadist renaissance.” Al-Zawahri, al-Qaeda’s longtime number two, was reportedly passed up for the top job after Bin Laden’s death. In other news, a recent poll suggests widespread global support for the killing of Bin Laden, though most people think it won’t change things. source
