Politics: Glenn Beck: Surprisingly good at explaining Julian Assange sex case

  • Glenn Beck has made a lot of wacko clips in his day, but this may be one of his most entertaining ever. In it, our boy explains in great detail what Julian Assange did to encourage his arrest on sex charges in Sweden. Beck’s main point in this clip? While he doesn’t like what Assange represents, something smells kinda funny to him. source

Tech: In the U.S., people smuggle drugs. In China, they smuggle iPads

  • 14 Chinese housewives were arrested for smuggling lots of tech devices into China
  • 88 the number of iPads the fourteen women had, roughly enough to create an iPad fort
  • 340 the number of phones they had; it was a total haul worth roughly $143,000 source
  • » Why the demand? Simple. The only version of the iPad sold in China is the wi-fi version. The 3G version (sold in Hong Kong) is in very high demand as a result. Plus, China has recently started taxing iPads brought in from Hong Kong, and on the other end, smugglers have been recruiting people without criminal records to make the runs from Hong Kong to China (for around $30 a run). We end this post with a visual image; imagine a woman with 65 smartphones wrapped around her chest and 20 more in her handbag. Yes, this actually happened.

Culture: Oprah upset because people still think she’s a lesbian

  • I’m not a lesbian. I’m not even kind of a lesbian. And the reason why [the rumor] irritates me is because it means that somebody must think I’m lying. That’s number one. Number two … why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life.
  • Oprah Winfery • Getting teary-eyed at the idea that someone would think she’s a lesbian. Oprah, who said this during a Barbara Walters interview which we’re now going to watch now that she’s said this, got very emotional about the accusations, which have revolved around her friend Gayle King. Here’s the thing, Oprah. Even if you were, it wouldn’t even be that big a deal. Ellen DeGeneres is basically your heir apparent, and she’s been an outed lesbian for like twelve years now. But we understand why the rumors suck. source

Politics: One well-known dude in Obama’s compromise corner: John Kerry

  • Obama can count on one influential Democrat in his corner. Problem is, it’s John Kerry, who’s as exciting as vat of ketchup. OK, now that we’ve gotten the veiled insult at his wife out of his way, let’s see what he has to say about the compromise: “The truth is, the President got a lot of things here we’ve been fighting for that we haven’t yet been able to win any other way.” It’s one of a number of messages that the White House has been distributing tonight. We have to emphasize, though, that we’re with Andrew Sullivan on this one: It’s frustrating to see Obama compromise, but he’s playing a pretty good game of handball with the GOP in making this compromise. source

World: China’s Confucius Peace Prize: More like the WTF Peace Prize

  • Are you asking about the peace prize thing? Regarding this event, our answer is ‘no comment,’ because we know nothing about it. Nobody has ever contacted us on this issue, and we only have secondhand information from journalists.
  • Taiwanese politician Lien Chan’s office manager • Expressing befuddlement at the peace prize offered to their boss by the chinese government. This is strange, because the Confucius Peace Prize was awarded to Lein, along with a $15,000 prize, which he’s supposed to accept on Thursday. If Lein doesn’t want it, we’ll take it. Then, right there, we’ll give the money to the long-suffering spouse of jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo. source

Culture: Harold Martin Smith’s gun tied to Ronni Chasen’s murder

  • saturday Police claimed last week that “Harold Johnson,” an ex-con bicyclist who shot himself to death while on the run, may not have been Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen’s killer.
  • wednesday Police claim the man, really named Harold Martin Smith, killed himself with the gun used in Chasen’s murder, making him the likely (but not slam-dunk) suspect. Police suspect a robbery gone bad. source

U.S.: See ya, Tommy Porteous: Senate impeaches federal judge

  • uncommon U.S. District Judge Thomas Porteous of Louisiana has been impeached and removed from his post for reasons of misconduct – the first federal judge impeachment since way back in 1989.
  • unfortunate Porteous, 64, has been suspended with pay for two years, but since he didn’t make it until age 65, he won’t be getting his federal pension. Bet that misconduct doesn’t seem so smart now, does it? source

Music: Rolling Stone has John Lennon’s last print interview – in audio form

  • Earlier this year I was cleaning up to find some files in the recesses of my closet when I came across two cassette tapes marked ‘John Lennon, December 5th, 1980.’ It had been 30 years since I listened to them, and when I put them on this totally alive, uplifting voice started speaking on this magical strip of magnetic tape.
  • Rolling Stone writer Jonathan Cott • On rediscovering the audio tapes made from the interview he did with John Lennon – the last print interview he did before his death, one which was never fully transcribed as a result. Considering today is the 30th anniversary of the iconic Beatle’s murder, it only makes sense that Rolling Stone would pull it out today. Still though, it’s a pretty cool document of rock history. source
