Politics: Julian Assange: A yo-yo in the Swedish legal system

  • The rape investigation against Assange? Back on. Wikileaks has had a bit of trouble in the past two weeks with this whole Julian Assange thing. As more details have leaked to the press, it’s become clear that there may be something there, though many supporters will debate that fact. But why push rape charges, unpush them and then push them again? It just leads to inconsistency and damages the case in the public eye. source

Culture: Longshot Magazine: Quick turnover, surprising results

  • Cool stuff in two days or less. Longshot Magazine just celebrated the launch of its second issue (Issue One, after Issue Zero), and it looks pretty sweet. The idea, created entirely by a staff of volunteers over a long weekend (with a little help from their friends, this time in the offices of Good Magazine), is applied publishing – super-experimental, based on a theme, ultra-stressful, but fun and interesting nonetheless. Produced using MagCloud, the mag will set you back a solid $11, but when the concept is this cool, why not splurge? source

Politics: Dear Dave Weigel: Nice recovery from that Journolist saga

  • He’s quickly become one of the best parts of Slate. Sometimes a little scandal is all you need to ensure your long-term place in the conversation. And that’s what Weigel, late of the Washington Post and currently of Slate, has been up to lately – ensuring his place in the conversation. With an entertaining blog, insightful articles and a generally compelling persona, Weigel is a guy that needs to stick around for a good long time, no matter how many conservatives he privately suggests set themselves on fire. source

U.S.: A numerical breakdown of James J. Lee’s many demands

  • 15 uses of the word “must” in Lee’s epic eco-manifesto
  • 32uses of the word “human,” the target of his ire
  • 14uses of the word “stop”; he’s very demanding in this thing
  • two uses of the word “need”; they come at the end of the manifesto source
  • » The brunt of his argument: Lee, who admits to being inspired by Daniel Quinn (whose bestseller “Ishmael” currently ranks number 317 on Amazon’s book listings) thinks that humans are causing many bad things in the world, and he wants them to stop their damage and destruction. So, he’s suggesting the network create a new game show that will encourage humans not to procreate. In general, he thinks that the world needs fewer humans, because they cause great damage to the planet. He’s a rare breed – he’s not pro-life or pro-choice. He’s anti-life. That’s rare.
