Politics: What’s the deal with JournoList? And who ratted out Dave Wiegel?

  • Some respected blogger just dropped Dave Wiegel in acid. Wiegel, a blogger/reporter for The Washington Post (disclosure: we work for the Washington Post Express, a subsidiary) resigned after a colleague on Ezra Klein’s JournoList, a private e-mail network for 400 mostly-liberal bloggers to vent about stuff, leaked that Wiegel said some not-nice things about the conservative movement he covered in his job. We don’t know the inner-workings of this e-mail network. But we do know it has numerous big names we know and respect. Further thoughts:
  • A total hit jobNow, we don’t quite think it’s entirely wise to suggest that Matt Drudge “light himself on fire,” like Wiegel did, but we do think it’s completely unfair that one of his colleagues ratted him out. It screams vendetta. It screams “dirty politics,” except with bloggers.
  • Journolist: A bad ideaLook, it’s great that journalists and bloggers talk to one another, but the idea of a giant, exclusive club gives the impression of a level of elitism – and slant opportunities – that journalism simply shouldn’t have. Especially when things like this happen. Keep it open.
  • old media’s divideTrust us: The next job Wiegel gets will be at a blog, not a newspaper. Why? Because the issues that cropped up prove that large newspapers don’t necessarily understand the nature of blogging. And that’s a bad thing. Especially for their futures. source

Tech: New fact of life at Gulf beaches: Kids clobbered by tar balls

  • At first, this clip seems totally innocuous, but then there’s a scene with a young girl who’s absolutely freaked out because there’s a giant chunk of oil on her. It’s freaking scary the way Jaws was, kinda. Thanks, BP. Thanks for nothing.

World: Jón Gnarr: Reykjavik, Iceland’s comedy mayor serious about his job

  • Just because something is funny doesn’t mean it isn’t serious.
  • Reykjavik, Iceland mayor Jón Gnarr • Regarding the numerous silly campaign promises he made prior to his election. See, Gnarr won election as mayor last month on the strength of a comedy party with a hilarious campaign video set to the tune of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best.” Now, with the Best Party in office, he was unwilling to form a coalition government with any other party unless they had watched every season of “The Wire.” And the free towels? Yeah, he got those taken care of. source

Tech: Blendtec ups the “Will it Blend” production values for the iPhone 4

  • The phone took a lot longer to blend this time. Sensing an opportunity to jump on the Gizmodo drama, Blendtec’s popular “Will it Blend” series added a little bit of a plot to its iPhone blending fun. One thing that’s clear from the clip – the iPhone screen is much tougher than the last few have been, because it actually holds up for a few seconds before turning into mush. Also, the “Blend My Phone” contest is freaking brilliant.

Politics: Highlights from Dick Cheney’s long, winding medical history

  • Dick Cheney’s clear proof the medical system works. The former vice president has had so many procedures done for his heart and the rest of his body that he’s his own living embodiment of why health care is effective. He also probably pays for at least one doctor’s yearly salary. Some highlights:
  • 1978 The year of Cheney’s first heart attack. He’s had three others since.
  • 2005 Cheney was treated for arterial aneurysms behind both of his knees.
  • 2007 An electrical impulse was used to correct his irregular heartbeat.
  • 2009 He underwent TWO elective surgeries for lumbar spinal stenosis. source

U.S.: That judge in the drilling moratorium case just sold Exxon stock

  • $15,000 worth of stock sold source
  • » Why did he sell it? Simple. Because he realized Exxon owned one of the wells he was ruling on, and that it was a blatant conflict of interest.

U.S.: OH CRAP. Could Tropical Storm Alex hit the oil-soaked Gulf?

  • Well, this looks promising. The first named storm of the Atlantic’s hurricane season just broke out, and guess where it is? That’s right, in pretty much the worst possible place for a storm to be this summer. Nothing like oil, wind and water mixing. source
