World: The U.S. can’t shake an Israel deal out of Benny Netanyahu

  • I think we have found the golden path between Israel’s traditional policies and our desire to move forward toward peace.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu • On leaving the U.S. without an agreement on that whole settlement thing that really pissed off the U.S. In perhaps the strongest sign that this statement isn’t entirely accurate, the two countries didn’t issue a joint statement about their peace talks. In other news, yet another Jerusalem settlement in a Palestinian area is getting built. Because, hey, why the heck not? source

U.S.: GOP Senators succeed in forcing another (#&(@&( health care vote

  • A couple of minor parliamentarian rules were broken. Senate Republicans are going out of their way this week to kinda be total )&#&# about the health care reconciliation bill, with stalling tactics, crazy amendments and such. Late last night, they succeeded at turning the reconciliation process into a pain in the butt, finding minor parliamentary problems with the bill (regarding Pell grants) that force a new House vote. Great. source

Tech: The word of Steve Jobs: E-mails come down like commandments

  • Over the last few weeks, Steve Jobs has been sending e-mails to random human beings left and right about Apple issues big and small. It’s bizarre and fascinating because his company is so secretive, and in the case of the “no,” it actually breaks big news (the guy who sent that was asking if he could tether his iPhone to his iPad, something which hadn’t been disclosed). “Almost every Mac Web site had picked it up,” said Jezper Söderlund, the music producer who asked the question, “and the biggest newspaper in town wrote about it. We had more visits to my Web site in 12 hours than we had all year. It was crazy.” Dear Steve: Do you like our blog? We hope you do. Your company makes good computers. Sincerely, Julius. source

Biz: A little clarity on that whole baby-sling-recall thang we posted

  • Babywearing is safe, but some slings and positions are not. While baby carriers are as old as civilization, modern babywearing has exploded in the last four years.
  • Mothering Magazine writer Elizabeth Carovillano • Giving some context to our earlier report on wearing babies like messenger bags. There’s a difference between the old-school approach holding a baby on your back or stomach and these new slings, which almost treat babies like laptops. The magazine offers some suggestions for choosing the best sling. Tip number one: “Only choose a sling that allows you to see your baby’s face.” Good idea. (hat tip Heather Denkmire) source

Politics: Senate Republicans play dirty with reconciliation bill amendments

  • 32 the number of amendments being offered up by Republicans to the reconciliation bill
  • one insane amendment removes access to

    offenders; it’s there to
    shame the Dems
  • zero the number of amendments that will pass; if any do, the entire bill goes back to the House source

Tech: Wikipedia went down today, and the world somehow survived

  • And so we remember Thursday, March 25, 2010 as the day every English speaking student failed their research papers.
  • Wikipedia commenter “Jimmy” • Regarding the server meltdown that the site had earlier today. The meltdown, which knocked out the site’s European data center, caused the server not to load for many users. It was due to overheating probably caused by someone looking up this article. “This problem was quickly resolved, but unfortunately it may take up to an hour before access is restored for everyone, due to caching effects,” a blog post on the downtime said. source

Tech: Facebook gets crap for allowing people to upload stranger photos

  • It’s apparently a huge privacy thing. Facebook – and Google, for that matter – allow you to upload photos and videos of people not on the site, without their consent. Now the Swiss and German governments are all up in arms about this, apparently missing the fact that you can do this on any other site on the Internet. Just to prove this point, we grabbed this photo from Flickr of some dudes at a party. We don’t know them, but they seem like they’re having fun. source
