Tech: Fake Steve Jobs’ “Operation Chokehold” worthy of a FCC response

  • Threats of this nature are serious and we caution the public to use common sense and good judgment when accessing the Internet from their commercial mobile devices. To purposely try to disrupt or negatively impact a network with ill-intent is irresponsible and presents a significant public safety concern.
  • FCC Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau chief Jamie Barnett • Giving Fake Steve Jobs’ super-amusing mass-iPhone-overuse threat some steam by actually commenting on it. Fake Steve (a.k.a. Daniel Lyons) is amused. So are we. Surprisingly, the whole debacle has generated massive amounts of press for the site and AT&T in general, because, well, it’s funny. source

Culture: Roy Disney, Walt’s nephew, just died. He revitalized Disney.

  • The modern Disney, as we know it, is thanks to him. Roy Disney, who died of stomach cancer at 79, was responsible for the revitalized focus on animation seen in such modern classics as “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Aladdin.” On the downside, the company eventually pulled away from this focus as the hits stopped coming, but they realized the error of their ways. Eventually. Either way, Roy spent 56 years with Disney, all of which being awesome. Peace out, bro. source

Tech: This new Earth-like planet needs a name. We have one idea.

We want to name this planet “Elliott Smith,” because more planets should be named after indie rock stars who we adore. Got any other ideas? Vote here. source

Tech: On the flip side, Microsoft and the EU no longer locking horns

  • Now if only Intel could get some of MS’s juju. The European Union has been on the company’s back over lack of browser choice, something Microsoft has responded to by actually listening to them and offering choices other than Internet Explorer to its users. The EU’s response? They’re dropping the suit, and MS gets to roam (somewhat) free. Happy time! source

Tech: Intel gets to try on Microsoft’s antitrust shoes for a while

The FTC sued the company for apparently using its market dominance to hold rule of the chip market. Which they’ve been doing for like 20 years, really. source

Tech: SEO experts made uncomfortable by the rise of real-time search

  • It’s like we’re back to Infoseek in 1997. If you want to rank #1, don’t worry about quality content, relevance or popularity, just be the last person to Tweet about a topic and you’ll come out on top (at least, for a few seconds).
  • SEOmoz CEO Rand Fishkin • In a post discussing (among other things) the sudden desire by Google (and Bing!) to be on top of the real-time search game. It’s all part of a list of his predictions for 2010. He’s not alone – apparently a lot of SEO experts are with him. He calls it the worst implementation of a new product he’s seen from Google so far, and suggests that it won’t last in its current form more than a couple of weeks. He’s probably nervous that it’s gonna cost him money because his entire business model is based on a search engine optimization model Google just broke. source

World: Copenhagen protesters: “We are peaceful. What about you?”

  • We haven’t been covering Copenhagen a ton for a number of reasons, mainly that not a lot is going to happen with the conference until Obama shows up at the end of the week. But the protests are still pretty interesting. This clip shows the chasm between the police and the many protesters better than most we’ve seen.
