Tech: Verizon nickels-and-dimes its customers even more

  • We cancel these unintended requests as fast as we can hit the End key, but it doesn’t matter; they’ve told me that ANY data–even one kilobyte–is billed as 1MB. The damage is done.
  • A Verizon customer writing to New York Times tech columnist David Pogue • Discussing how the company has price-gouged them at $1.99 a pop. Hit the wrong button, and it goes to a screen that starts downloading data. When you try downloading that data, Verizon rounds up to a full megabyte and charges you. Pogue is livid about these kind of charges – along with the company’s new $350 penalty for switching providers early. These nickel-and-dime schemes make the company millions of dollars each year. And it isn’t right. • source

Politics: “Going Rogue” leak: Sarah Palin trashes Katie Couric & John McCain

  • Perhaps the biggest target of Sarah Palin’s scorn in “Going Rogue”? Katie Couric, with whom she had a miserable interview last year during the McCain campaign. The former vice presidential wannabe also says (according to Drudge, who got a copy of the book) that McCain’s people blocked her from having any meaningful discussion with the press. If you’ve heard her speak since, you know exactly why, and it’s probably better she was held back. In other news, Levi’s Playgirl shoot featured a hockey stick.source

U.S.: Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s lawyer says he’s paralyzed pretty badly

  • It appears he won’t be able to walk in the future.
  • Lawyer and retired Army Col. John Galligan • Describing the condition of his client, who will be facing trial on 13 counts of murder in last week’s Fort Hood shooting. Considering Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s condition was originally described by the press as “dead,” paralyzed is an upgrade. However, we imagine this could complicate a trial for this case. • source

U.S.: 9/11 “mastermind” Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is gonna get tried

  • In federal court. In NYC. Seems like a bad spot. Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, a guy who has become as famous for the photo of his capture as he has for what he did, will face charges for masterminding the Sept. 11 attacks. This step is part of Obama’s slow-moving grand plan to close Guantanamo for good. source
