U.S.: The Senate Democrats make one last push for the public option

  • A couple Senate Finance Committee Dems plan to push for it today. Obama has seemingly given up on the public option, but other Democrats haven’t, and today, they plan to push for its presence in the Baucus plan by forcing a vote. Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Chuck Schumer may not have the votes to get it passed, so it could be a mere symbolic gesture, but you have to start throwing the kitchen sink at some point. source

Music: Thom Yorke’s new backup band features Flea. Yes, THAT Flea.

Thom Yorke and his backup band
  • Despite having a super-famous Red Hot Chili Pepper as his bassist, the rest of the Radiohead singer’s solo band certainly couldn’t be called a cast of unknowns either. They include really well-known session drummer Joey Waronker, Brazilian-born Mauro Refosco and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Oh, and Flea. Wasn’t he in The Big Lebowski?source

World: Wait wait … Iran says it has nuclear “rights”? Explain.

  • Iran will not discuss issues related to its nuclear ‘rights’ … in Geneva on Thursday. But we can discuss about disarmament, we can discuss about non-proliferation and other general issues. The new site is part of our rights and there is no need to discuss.
  • Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization head Ali Akbar Salehi • Discussing the country’s nuclear program – or actually, not discussing it. If Iran doesn’t hear something it likes on Thursday and America increases economic sanctions, the country may back out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Great. Our question: Why does Iran keep doing this to themselves? The rest of the world does not understand what you’re trying to prove with the random sword-waving. • source

Culture: Roman Polanski to Swiss: Will you guys let me go? Please?

  • The director’s hoping for leniency. Roman Polanski submitted an application to a a Swiss court today asking to be let go. He’s willing to have limitations set on his freedom. The court will decide in the next few weeks whether to let him go. Man, if they let him go after all the fuss they made about capturing him … that would be a #)&!storm. source

U.S.: Welcome back Sully: The heroic Hudson pilot goes back to work

  • The months since January 15 have been very full, and my family and I have had some unforgettable experiences. However, I have missed working with my colleagues at US Airways and I am eager to get back in the cockpit with my fellow pilots in the months ahead.
  • Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger • On returning to work in a slightly different role. The US Airways pilot will be returning as a management pilot and will also play a larger role in safety management. Considering the pin-point landing he made with Flight 1549, he’s going to be perfect for that role. • source
