U.S.: Obama wins a big victory over defense spending in the Senate

  • No more F-22s After getting added to a bill at the last minute a week ago, Obama threatened to veto the entire defense spending bill unless they were taken off the table. The jets, not only expensive but a product of a bygone era of war-fighting, were an iconic symbol of the administration’s fight to focus on insurgency-focused warfare. source

  • McCain’s big help Former presidential race foe John McCain played a huge role for Obama. McCain said the victory, attributable to stands taken by both Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, “really means there’s a chance of us changing the way we do business in Washington.” McCain’s support meant the vote was bipartisan. source

Culture: Hall and Oates – and Oates’ stache – are back, in cartoon form

  • Well, this is much better than it has any right to be. “J-Stache” is a cartoon featuring Hall and Oates, with Oates’ stache as one of the main characters. We heard about it when it was first being discussed, and held our breath hoping it would be great, and this video sure provides a lot of ammunition in its favor.source

U.S.: Cambridge police will forget about the Harvard professor arrest

  • I think both parties were wrong. I think that’s fair to say. It wasn’t Professor Gates’ best moment. and it was not the Cambridge Police Department’s best moment.
  • Cambridge Police Department Spokeswoman Kelly Downes • Regarding the drama that both the police department and Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. went through after Gates was arrested last week for disorderly conduct. While Downes says there was “probable cause” to arrest the professor, both the police department and Gates are looking to get the drama behind them. Gates’ arrest stirred up lots of criticism due to the fact that he’s black and the circumstances appeared to be racial profiling. • source

Politics: The GOP latches onto a Lady Gaga parody as a shining example

  • 23-year-old Matt Damon … er, Peter Cowman is currently being used as a shining example of how to do social media right in terms of spreading a political message. Cowman, from Republican Rep. Dave Reichert’s district in Washington, re-wrote the lyrics to Lady Gaga’s newfangled classic “Just Dance” to criticize overspending in Congress and by Obama. It’s clever, but it’s no Penny guy or Auto-Tune the News.source

Tech: Are Apple’s random App Store rules hurting the iPhone?

  • It’s one thing to delay a homebrew project like mine, but it’s another thing to shut down a team of developers burning real cash. Apple should be worried when real programmers shrug off the rejections by saying, ‘It’s just a hobby.’
  • Infoworld columnist Peter Wayner • Describing the hoops he’s had to go through – along with the months of waiting – just to get an iPhone app version of his book onto the App Store. He’s still trying to get a pay version on – with proceeds that go to charity – after four months. • source

avettbrothers0721
  • The Avetts will probably be one of the success stories of 2009, based on the amount of buzz the Americana band’s Rick Rubin-produced “I and Love and You,” out in September, is getting. The title track, which sounds like the kind of song that makes a career, is freely downloadable in MP3 form on Spinner. source
