Offbeat: Facing limited income flow, someone steals from tampon machines

  • I think that if you’re going to steal something, you should steal it from someplace better than a tampon machine. It’s got to be bad if someone’s stealing from a machine in a bathroom.
  • Michigan State University student Sheena Patel • Making our alma mater proud by saying such profound things as this nugget about someone who’s stealing change from tampon machines. The university is missing $7.50 in change from two weeks of robberies, which means someone isn’t having lunch. Really, the culprit could be anyone, but man, this story would take a turn for the awesome/creepy if it was a dude. • source

Sports: Just when you thought ex-QB Ryan Leaf couldn’t fall any further …

  • Leaf was arrested on drug and burglary charges. You might remember Ryan Leaf as the guy who was drafted the same year as Peyton Manning and proceeded to tank in quick order. Or as the guy who worked at a small college as an assistant coach because his NFL career didn’t work out. Or even that guy who’s the trivia question. But now you can remember him as the guy arrested at the Canadian border on felony robbery and drug possession charges. If he keeps falling from grace, he might have whiplash. source

Politics, Tech: You’re lying to yourself if you think you’ll make money blogging

  • Google ads pay almost nothing. Banner ads are worth almost nothing, and the market for advertising has cratered with the Great Recession.
  • Blogger Jake Seliger • Who combined the main points of two articles we recently posted about to make the argument that we’ll never make money blogging. But it doesn’t mean we won’t keep trying. Because we’re crazy and apparently aren’t sure how to stop. • source

Offbeat, U.S.: When Obama isn’t busy saving the economy, he’s swatting flies

  • Obama has a huge problem. His new house is swarming with flies, and it’s pissing him off. “He chases them down in the Oval with his briefing papers to smack them,” notes Council of Economic Advisors member Austan Goolsbee. They’re trying to kill them, but they’re still floating around everywhere. We know man. They annoy us too.source

U.S.: Obama: If we have to, we’ll classify these torture photos

  • Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham regaled the knowledge to Congress. Have a desire to see some pretty crazy stuff that the U.S. did to imprisoned terror suspects? Possibly just to see if you can take how disturbing these photos are reported to be? Well, good news, kids. You can’t see them. Apparently the Obama administration is going to classify these photos if it prevents them from getting out. He prefers an act of Congress, but isn’t afraid to just block them himself. Good for them. We don’t need to see terror porn. source

U.S.: Nevada Sen. John Ensign, then and now. It’s pretty sad, kids.

  • Ensign, a social conservative, was one of Bill Clinton’s harshest critics during the Monica Lewinsky saga, saying “the truth must come out.” He also trashed on Larry Craig pretty badly. source
  • The rising Republican star took a detour from rising when he admitted last night to an affair with one of his Congressional staffers. Why now? Dude probably wants to run for president. source

Politics, World: Could Iran’s Supreme Leader throw Ahmadinejad over?

  • I think it’s certainly within the realm of possibilities. And I would argue, John, Ahmadinejad doesn’t necessarily have the loyalty of the Revolutionary Guards and the Basiege.
  • Karim Sadjadpour • An Iranian expert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, speaking to CNN on whether Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has the support that would allow him to remain leader under that strife he’s facing. Because, in the case of Ayatollah Khamenei, it’s about his survival, too.  • source

U.S., World: Also being blamed for Iran’s 99 problems: The U.S.

  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry is trashing on Obama for speaking out. The ministry got a hold of the Swiss ambassador, who handles U.S. affairs in the country, complaining about “interventionist” statements Obama made regarding the hotly-contested election. The U.S. hasn’t had consistent ties with Iran since shortly after the Islamic revolution in 1979, though Obama is trying to get his foot in the door. source
