Politics, U.S.: Sarah Palin’s struggle with balancing national and state attention

  • The source of the greatest tension this year between the Legislature and the executive has been certainly the appearance that the executive is prioritizing her national image, her national brand, over the day-to-day operations of state government and the interests of the State of Alaska.
  • Mike Hawker • The Republican co-chairman of the Alaska House Finance Committee, on the strained relationship between the legislature and Sarah Palin. When Tina Fey’s parodied you on SNL and your daughter’s ex-boyfriend gets absurd amounts of attention, it’s hard to focus, isn’t it? • source

Biz, Offbeat: Yo, fattie, you’re taking up an extra seat! Time to pay double!

  • United joins in the anti-fattie air crusade. Are you really fat. Like, really fat? Fatter than that, even? Say, bigger than a breadbox, or an airplane seat? Well, if your fatness gets you booted off a flight, you’re paying for two on United. They’re not alone in their policy – eight other airlines already do it. United defines obese as, get this, “unable to lower the arm rest and buckle a seat belt with one extension belt.” So, sorry fat people. You’re fat. source

  • Breaking 900k feels like a marathon runner entering Olympic stadium. However my @replys are becoming difficult to track.
  • Ashton Kutcher • On breaking 900,000 freaking followers. He challenged CNN to a ego-waving contest to see who can get to a million followers first. We hope neither of them win. • source

Politics, U.S.: Texas governor Rick Perry is talking secession. Pssh, whatever.

  • Tea parties make you say the craziest things. Perry, who spoke at a number of tea parties today, was in Austin when he loudly proclaimed, “Secede!” He said Texas could get so riled up that they might want to secede, but probably won’t. Well, why did you say it, then? Every state could want to secede. And you guys aren’t even Quebecers with your weird dialect of French. You have no good reason to secede. We don’t want to have to bring a passport when we go to SXSW, OK? source

U.S.: How does Obama pick who gets tax cuts? Well, he leaves out the rich.

  • We start from the simple premise that we should reduce the tax burden on working people, while helping Americans go to college, own a home, raise a family, start a business and save for retirement.
  • President Barack Obama • Defending his tax strategy and promising more cuts by the end of the year. All those conservatives teabagging with Dick Armey? (Sorry, we couldn’t resist the potty joke.) Not on the list, apparently, which is why they’re ticked off. We blame the red coats. • source

Politics, U.S.: Tax day tea parties: Because we need more pre-fab media events

  • They are worried that our nation is quickly being taken in the wrong direction by politicians who are more concerned about the next election instead of the next generation.
  • Sen. Jim DeMint, R-South Carolina • On why people are getting involved in the tax day tea parties being held across the country. He claims the events are bipartisan but only Republican politicians seem to be taking part in them. Hmm. • source

Culture: Rod Blagojevich has fallen to the depths of celebrity reality TV. LOL.

  • the show Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has agreed to be on the next season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” which is just hi-larious. The impeached ex-pol stands to make $80,000 a week on the show, but at the cost of any shame or personal integrity he had left.
  • the catch Unfortunately, there may be one thing standing in the way of him making bank on his notoriety. The show tapes in Costa Rica, and he needs to convince the judge presiding over his corruption trial to loosen travel restrictions. For the love of God, judge, please say yes! Pretty please? source
