U.S.: 11-year-old’s lawyer: Let him go to juvenille court instead of jail

  • I want him to be occupied and busy and back, essentially, in school. I wouldn’t say he’s in good spirits. He’s confused. He looks and acts like a typical 11-year-old.
  • Dennis Elisco • Attorney for Jordan Brown, the 11-year-old boy accused of killing his dad’s pregnant girlfriend, Kenzie Marie Houk. The prison didn’t have supplies to accommodate an 11-year-old; Brown is wearing far-too-large prison clothing, including pants cuffed up “about 10 times,” according to Elisco. • source

U.S.: Could this be the elusive cure to the flu?

  • One treatment to prevent them all. An experimental flu treatment kills multiple strains at once in mice, says the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. The treatment, made from human proteins, managed to kill such strains as bird flu and the 1918 strain that caused an epidemic. But will it work on humans? We’ll find out as soon as the 2010-2011 flu season, when human trials could begin. source

Culture: Our quick little attempt at Oscar analysis

  • The quirky winners “Wall-E” and “Man on Wire” handily won in their respective categories, Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary. Both had great reviews. Both should have been nominated in the larger categories, like “Best Picture.” One day, Pixar will get a “Best Picture” nod. And we will cheer. source

  • The acting categories You could see the winners coming from a mile away. Heath Ledger won his category a year ago. Kate Winslet won hers a month ago. Penelope Cruz was kind of a shoo-in, too. The only really competitive contest? Best Actor, where it seemed Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn both had a shot. (Penn won.) source

  • Upset of the night In the foreign language category, the frontrunner seemed to be “Waltz with Bashir,” an Israeli documentary with breathtaking use of Flash and traditional animation. It had some pretty awesome reviews and still has some strong buzz. But, sadly, it lost to Japanese film “Departures.” source

Culture: Oscar quote of the night: Best Actor, Sean Penn

  • You commie homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I wanted to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often. But I am touched by the appreciation.
  • Sean Penn • on winning the best actor award for “Milk.” OK, it wasn’t as good as Mickey Rourke’s speech last night, but we’ll give him credit for saying something funny. • source

Biz: A charge too far: US Airways stops charging for drinks

  • $1 for coffee, $2 for soda or water? The airline, in a desire to cut costs and bring in new sources of revenue to fend off bankruptcy, did things that other airlines did – charge for checked baggage, premium seats and using frequent-flier miles to book tickets. But charging for a soda seemed a bit much to most people, so in a memo to employees, CEO W. Douglas Parker said they would back off of the policy starting March 1. Kudos to them for realizing that there’s a limit to nickel-and-diming customers. source

Culture: Let’s hope Mickey Rourke wins tonight so he does this again

  • He is one tough son of a &(%^* and he don’t like it when I say that ’cause he goes, ‘Mickey, you’ll scare all the other actors away from me.’ But Darren, you know what, if they ain’t got the balls to bring it, then &*^& ’em, you know.
  • Mickey Rourke • discussing “The Wrestler” director Darren Aronofsky during his best actor acceptance speech at the Independent Spirit Awards last night. Rourke’s lengthy rant also included odes to his dead Chihuahua and a plea to give Eric Roberts a second chance, too. He’s up for a best actor Oscar tonight, too. • source
