U.S.: Hippie takeover: D.C.’s plastic bag tax, S.F.’s cell phone radiation law

  • 5¢ amount shoppers have to pay to get a plastic bag at any store in D.C.; yes, it’s annoying, but at least it’s encouraging people to use fabric bags instead source
  • $300 amount cell phone companies could soon pay in San Francisco for not posting information about cell phone radiation levels; this also sounds annoying source

Culture: Quick advice to Kal Penn on braving the streets of D.C.

  • first Don’t walk around 15th & S NW by yourself at 1:30 a.m. on a weekday. During the day that area’s OK, but at night … it’s not super-safe.
  • second You should work this robbery at gunpoint subplot into the next Harold and Kumar movie. Just a thought from us at SFB. source

U.S.: Gay marriage is now legal in D.C. It’s a good reason to celebrate!

  • I didn’t want to get married anywhere else. This is my city standing up for marriage equality.
  • D.C. resident Rocky Galloway • On his now-legal marriage to Reggie Stanley, his partner of six years. Gay marriage became legal today after the Supreme Court chose not to intervene in a last-ditch effort to stop it. We wonder what that means for the court case currently grinding through in California. source

U.S.: Unlucky Mount St. Helens climber found; no, he didn’t survive.

  • Boom, it busted off and I saw him clawing for the edge with a startled look on his face, and then he disappeared. I was looking right at him, he was only 10 feet away … then he just disappeared.
  • Climber Scott Salkovics • On the death of fellow climber, Joseph Bohlig, who fell 1,500 feet to his death inside Mount St. Helens yesterday. The cornice that held him up fell out from under him, literally making him fall inside the volcano.  Salkovics was just watching Bohlig get his picture taken by a friend. source

U.S.: Place you don’t want to be: Inside an active, deadly volcano

  • Poor guy. A climber reportedly fell inside the caldera (i.e. giant eruption-caused hole) of Mt. St. Helens today. He was five feet from the edge of the crater when the ground he was standing on collapsed.  Rescue crews are now trying to save him. *fingers crossed* source

U.S.: The 2010 D.C. Snowpocalypse, as brought to you by Flickr

  • Well, that’s a little bit of snow, eh? The Snowpocalypse is mostly over at this point, but the photos do an amazing job of telling how wide-ranging one of the craziest storms D.C. has ever gotten really is. If you live in the city proper (or in a handful of outlying areas like Arlington), by the way, it was actually kinda fun, because the Metro was still running underground, which meant that you could get to some of the snowball fights shown here. source

U.S.: Senator Bob Corker: OnStar saved my daughter’s car!

  • I was telling the lady who handles that for me in Chattanooga, each month I was saying, ‘I don’t want to pay this, I don’t want to pay this.’ … Certainly it paid off tremendously last night.
  • Sen. Bob Corker • Describing how OnStar helped him get his daughter Julia’s car back after it was jacked from her on the mean streets of D.C. Wednesday night. The Tennessee Republican chose to keep the $18-a-month service, which came in handy when it helped police find the suspects – and the vehicle – at a Taco Bell in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Dudes, you’re supposed to run for the border, but you’re not supposed to just stop there! source
