Tech: Is Facebook’s Open Graph the new Microsoft Windows?

  • Their vision of an open graph of people and things (with Facebook at the center) is becoming reality, and debates by technologists won’t change that. Facebook is taking over our identity and we are going along with that happily. It will take a new technology paradigm to disrupt what Facebook is doing.
  • TechCrunch king Michael Arrington • Discussing why Facebook is in a dominant position in the industry, and why they’re in a position to convince everyone to use their Open Graph and like button mechanism. He compares what Facebook is doing to Microsoft Windows, and suggests that, despite complaints about various details of the concept, they’ve got the market lynchpinned. “Someday, maybe a decade from now,” he writes, “some new technology will rise and allow other companies to threaten Facebook. But until then there is little to stop them. Their march to dominance has just begun.” Do you guys think this is true? source

Offbeat: Feel-good story: 99-year-old woman’s first computer an iPad

  • Admit it, you needed a pick-me up. Good thing we have Virginia Campbell, the 99-year-old woman and nursing home resident making sense of her new digital toy. The poet and writer had never owned a computer before, but read a lot. Unfortunately, her eyesight was going bad, so the hype around the device sucked her in. And now she can read on this device really easily. Man, she’s gonna be so upset when she realizes it doesn’t run Flash. source

Tech: Adult entertainment continues its long history of tech innovation

  • Every step of the way, when there’s a new technology, we explore it. In the adult business, many times the traditional venues are not available to us, so we have to be innovative to get our content to the consumer. With adult content, you need to create your own solutions.
  • Private Media Group CEO Ilan Bunimovitz • Regarding the company’s push to get streaming HTML5 video on the iPad. The cloud system is innovative, but gets around the whole app store getup. Beyond the iPad though, innovation is taking hold in other ways for adult entertainment. One company is blowing $4 million on “3D Zen and Sex,” a 3D porn film which promises will be unlike any you’ve seen before. In other words, the long history of innovation in adult entertainment continues unabated. source

U.S.: New $100 dollar bill: What the #(*# is this stupid #(&@?

  • Dear U.S. treasury: Maybe you should consider switching to debit cards for large denominations like these. Because, uh, this 3D crap is just getting really stupid and over the top. We’re also convinced Ben Franklin would find this treatment pretty demeaning, too. This isn’t money. This is an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, in legal tender form. source

Tech: The reason Opera Mini was approved for the iPhone? It sucks. Badly.

  • Opera Mini: like VNC-ing from your iPhone to a Motorola Razr with a really fast connection.
  • Panic developer Neven Mrgan • Saying what needed to be said about the browser. It’s a fast, zippy browser, but as Harry McCracken notes, it makes Safari look that much better in comparison. In fact, we’d argue it’s ugly. It also makes ShortFormBlog look like it was built in 1997 by people who hadn’t heard of CSS. If we’d paid for it, we’d want our money back. We still might ask for it, even. source
