Tech: Wolfram Alpha doesn’t understand copyright, either

  • Copyright, as Wolfram seems not to understand, is a bargain between creators and their public. As an *incentive* to create, the former are given a time-limited monopoly by governments. Note that it is *not* a reward for having created: it is an incentive to create again.
  • ComputerWorld U.K. columnist Glyn Moody • Noting the should’ve-been-game-changing service’s overbearing copyright policy, which states that “failure to properly attribute results from Wolfram Alpha is not only a violation of [its license terms], but may also constitute academic plagiarism or a violation of copyright law.” So in other words, Wolfram Alpha is worse than the Associated Press. AND is has a laughably expensive iPhone app, too. It’s like the service was created by a bunch of scientists who don’t understand how the real world works! • source

Tech: The Twitter-only “Twitter Peek”: The most useless device ever?

twitterpeak1103
  • There’s already a device that does this easily. It’s called a cell phone. The original Peek is a neat idea – this is just jumping on a trend. Even the Wikireader is a better idea than this. source

Tech: We’re convinced Apple’s Magic Mouse is gratuitous nerd porn.

  • We know, we know. There have been a lot of tech-oriented articles on the site today. But that’s because there’s been a lot of really awesome tech toys on the radar today. But really, the biggest one is Apple’s new Magic Mouse, which combines the multitouch technology the company has been flaunting on the Macbooks for nearly a year with the Mighty Mouse, a mouse that sounded like a better idea than it actually was (because the tiny ball didn’t live up to the hype). But watching this video, we’re convinced that this device is purely pornographic. Magic Mouse? More like Magic Fingers. source

Tech: Some jerkwad wastes beer AND a Palm Pre. Painful to watch.

  • WHY?! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!?! Beer is awesome. So is the Palm Pre. So some jerk decided to combine the two to see what happened. It isn’t pretty. In fact, it’s pretty darn sad. It pains us to watch it. source

Tech: Congrats to AT&T for completely clouding the Google Voice issue

  • The FCC’s worried about that thing AT&T mentioned now. A couple weeks ago, we mentioned that it seemed like AT&T’s mentioning of Google Voice’s blocking of rural calls screamed of a lawyer looking very closely for a way to screw over Google. Well, it appears they’ve succeeded. The FCC sent a letter to Google asking why they were blocking those calls. If they decide that Google should be treated like big telecom companies in this regard, it could hurt a budding service. source

Tech: Thought Saturn’s other rings were cool? Check out this one.

Giant infrared ring around saturn
  • This ring is giant, way bigger than all the other ones, but we haven’t been able to see it until now. That’s because NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope works sort of like the signal that makes your remote control work. It uses infrared signals to pick up light which isn’t otherwise obviously visible. source
