U.S.: Barack Obama remembers Ted Kennedy as a “great leader”

  • An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time.
  • President Barack Obama • In a speech regarding the death of Ted Kennedy. Obama was close to Kennedy, even when the Senator was quickly declining in health. “Even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness,” he said, “I’ve profited as president from his encouragement and wisdom.” Kennedy’s endorsement of the president was seen as a turning point in last year’s campaign, even if it came at a cost of damaging longstanding relationships with former president Bill Clinton. • source

Offbeat: The world’s stupidest woman tries to solve California’s problems

  • Stupid things this woman says in this video:
    1. “I think we should make a perfect pesticide for the crops.”
    2. “We need the food because it’s food and stuff.”
    3. “And the businesses downtown really need to lower their rent, because of the rent was lower, those people would really have their own businesses.”
    4. “They’re very good at making things … they’re like experts.”
    5. “We can make things … the machine can make it for us.”
    6. “On the East Coast, they have slaves and believe in Made in China … on the new West Coast, we don’t believe in that, we believe in the union, and that’s what we are.”
    7. “The Bush administration, which is really good …”
    8. “You can grow every kind of fruit and vegetable you want. They have fruit trees and vegetable trees; that’s where fruits and vegetables come from.”
    9. “Growing food is so good … for the people.”
10.“The food is free … so we should just sell it at the farmer’s market.”source

Politics, U.S.: Max Headroom special edition: Sarah Palin is f#(^ing crazy

  • The resignation video
  • Our analysis
0:05-0:09 – Sarah Palin’s speech, already crazy, takes a turn about here, linking the military to freedom of speech.
    0:09-0:14 – Oh God, please don’t.
0:23-0:51 – In your analysis of the press, could you be more bitingly cynical, Sarah?
0:52-1:04 – She just killed whatever credibility she had left with the press.
1:05-1:28 – Just don’t tell her crowd of supporters. They still love her.
1:29-1:38 – Trust us. Ricky Hollywood doesn’t regret his moment in the sun. source

Culture, U.S.: Barack Obama gets mad props from supernerd John Hodgman

  • John Hodgman is our hero. Between “The Areas of My Expertise,” “The Daily Show” and the “I’m A Mac” commercials, Hodgman has lots of nerd cred. So the fact that he calls Barack Obama the “nerd president” in this Radio & TV Correspondents’ Dinner speech is awesome and significant.source

World: Coming soon: Israel’s response to Obama’s Cairo speech

  • Benjamin Netanyahu had a few issues with what Obama said. Saying that Obama’s speech offered a perspective that seemed not to account for thousands of years of Jewish history, the Israeli Prime Minister will speak today. His speech will cover similar ground and be broad-based in hopes of building diplomacy. But not even many in his own country are giving much weight to the speech. You need to try harder if you’re gonna impress us, Ben. source

U.S., World: Barack Obama’s friendly, open arms approach to the Muslim world

  • I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking in Cairo, Egypt on the need for the U.S. to find common ground with the Muslim world. This guy doesn’t like it, but we’re guessing this fresh approach could find currency there. I mean, Hugo Chavez likes him! That’s gotta mean something! • source

U.S., World: Osama bin Laden does what he does best: Fearmongers

  • Obama and his administration have planted seeds for hatred and revenge against America.
  • Osama bin Laden • In an audiotape aired Wednesday by Al Jazeera that was designed to undercut the speech Obama plans to make to the Muslim world in Egypt. Bin Laden (or whoever is playing him on the tape) has good reason to come out and criticize Obama now – his open-arms diplomacy represents a threat to terrorist organizations in the Middle East. • source

Offbeat, U.S.: Obama can’t get Robert Gates’ name right, by the way

  • He introduced Gates as “William” during yesterday’s speech. Obama sees Robert Gates just about every day, but despite this, he still got the defense secretary’s name wrong during yesterday’s speech, which in our opinion is hilarious. It’s possible that he just had Will on his mind too much, seeing as that was his most-used word. Or he might’ve been talking about Bill Gates. Whatever. Just don’t do it again, dude. source

Politics, U.S.: Key quote from Barack Obama’s speech on security today

  • I want to solve these problems, and I want to solve them together as Americans. And we will be ill served by some of the fear-mongering that emerges whenever we discuss this issue.
  • President Barack Obama • Whose speech defending his tactics and attempt to close the detention camps at Guantanamo Bay is a stark contrast from former veep Dick Cheney’s vitriol. • source
