Politics: Janet Napolitano resignation calls are getting louder, bipartisan

  • We should have someone who doesn’t need to go in there and learn about terrorism, learn about security. How close were these 300 people on this plane from losing their lives because homeland security broke down? Boy, it was really close.
  • New Jersey State Senate President (and former governor) Richard Codey • On his feeling regarding Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Codey feels that the former Arizona governor isn’t a good fit for the post, in that she doesn’t have a background in security. Many Republicans feel the same way (and have been criticizing her for months). Now, we don’t think it’s gotten this bad yet, but the building bipartisan support should give the Obama administration pause. source

U.S.: The TSA’s getting all annoying about bloggers posting documents

  • They’re saying it’s a security document but it was sent to every airport and airline. It was sent to Islamabad, to Riyadh and to Nigeria. So they’re looking for information about a security document sent to 10,000-plus people internationally. You can’t have a right to expect privacy after that.
  • Blogger Steven Frischling • On posting a document the TSA released about new airline security measures. He and another blogger were visited by the organization after posting the documents, subpoenas in tow. The documents weren’t classified, but the agency says security directives “are not for public disclosure.” Ugh, whatever guys. Go scan our shoes or something instead. source

U.S.: Underwear bomber: About time this terrorist guy had a nickname!

  • There was a technical problem that resulted in a non-complete explosion.
  • A statement from al-freaking-Qaeda • Regarding the underwear bomber, who we’ll also refer to as the “undie bomber,” the “tighty-whitie bomber” and” the guy about to ruin security checks for everyone.” Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, as his mother named him, was in fact working with al-Qaeda, who claim great success in actually getting the explosive device through security. They claim that the bombing attempt was retribution for bombings in Yemen that screwed their stuff up. Dudes, this guy got way closer to blowing something up than any guy since the Shoe Bomber. source

Politics: A quick note to the Obama administration on airline security

  • The president is very confident that this government is taking the steps that are necessary to take our fight to those who seek to do us harm.
  • Robert Gibbs • Speaking about airline security and Obama’s role in making sure it’s done right. You know, Barack, you seem like a reasonable dude, so whatever you do, keep in mind that you were once in coach like the rest of us, and you know what it’s like. Don’t force rules on us that fudge the real issues of improving security. It helps nobody and angers normal people greatly instead. source

World: In Nigeria, the terror suspect got through security, no problem

  • Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab even went through a secondary check. Obviously feeling the pressure that they let through a guy who tried to blow up a plane, a senior Nigerian aviation official explained the process he went through. He didn’t check any baggage, carried a shoulder bag, went through a traditional security check, passed with flying colors, and went through a secondary check at the boarding gate. He had a multiple-visit U.S. visa, but not one to enter Britain after applying to a bogus college there. Nigeria’s airline security, BTW, successfully passed recent audits. source

Tech: What piece of software is the most vulnerable? Firefox, of course!

  • 102 vulnerabilities were found in the slow, bloated (but good) Web browser
  • 45 vulnerabilities were found in Adobe Reader, which should scare you, PDF fans
  • 41 vulnerabilities were found in Microsoft Office, which is freaking obvious source

Culture: For rapper 50 Cent, it’s “get high-priced security or die tryin'”

50 Cent spends $20,000 a week on security. His Vitamin Water money is probably gone at that rate. source

U.S.: It wasn’t random: The suspect likely knew the slayed Yale student

  • It happened in a building with very tight security. The discovery of Annie Le’s body in a Yale medical research building narrows down who it could have been. The building required access, meaning that the possible number of people it could have been was very narrow. “Only Yalies had access to that basement, and that seems to point to someone in our community being involved in this,” said Thomas Kaplan, editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. “That’s what is so frightening.” source

U.S.: So much for a slow Saturday: LaGuardia Airport evacuated

Apparently the man “was just acting crazy,” which led to the evacuation sure, but sounds like the vaguest description ever. source

Tech: Apple finally starts listening to hackers, patches the iPhone

  • After trying for weeks to convince Apple to fix their iPhone software, two security researchers revealed a scary method for hacking the iPhone using SMS. source
  • After feeling the wrath of negative PR contained in that message, Apple hurried and fixed the vulnerability, but you have to hook up to iTunes to fix it. source
