Culture: Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury: Why the heck not?

  • He needed another direction, so why not Freddie Mercury? Sacha Baron Cohen’s films – specifically “Borat” and “Bruno” are entertaining in a very painful way, but it’s the kind of amazing trick that only works for so long. First, people will figure out it’s you. Second, it’s the kind of joke that can get old very quick – comparing “Borat” to “Bruno” on Metacritic is a major hint that the joke fell flat. We like the idea of Cohen playing the Queen singer – he has no issues with playing flamboyant gay characters, wearing spandex, or with growing over-the-top mustaches. Plus, the director on deck, Peter Morgan, also directed “Frost/Nixon” and “The Last King of Scotland,” two rock-solid flicks from the last few years. Maybe this’ll be a great direction for him. source

Politics: Ron Paul talks more of his crazy mumbo-jumbo

  • While I would like nothing more than to see the Federal Reserve abolished, it is not absolutely necessary to do so with direct legislation.
  • Ron Paul • In a column on CNN where he argues that more transparency – and less spending – is needed at the Federal Reserve. But it’s all veiled – he would rather the Fed go away entirely. The uber-libertarian 2008 presidential candidate, last seen in Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” trying to fend off a gay guy, recently released a book, “Going Rogue”End the Fed,” arguing just that. We tried to continue reading what Paul was saying, but it made our brains hurt. • source

Culture: Well, that sucks. Appears major critics aren’t so hot on “Bruno”

  • The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday, savaged Sacha Baron Cohen’s mock-doc, saying “the skits don’t add up to anything substantive, and even his swipes at U.S. politicians here seem gratuitously cruel.”
  • While Colin Covert of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says Cohen’s latest is “a bit of a letdown” and notes that it feels padded, he still says “he’ll never run out of bigotry, idiocy and hypocrisy to spoof.”

Culture: Why Eminem isn’t really relevant anymore. Just famous.

  • About five or six years ago, Eminem would have been the one responsible for making a memorable scene like this. Now he’s just the victim.source

Culture: Paula Abdul: She got fooled by Bruno, didn’t even realize it

  • Sacha Baron Cohen is working hard. Between Ron Paul and this amazingly funny trailer, dude has been trying his best to make his newest movie just as funny as “Borat.” Now comes word that “Bruno” has successfully clawed in “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul, who apparently has no idea she was fooled by the over-the-top gay Austrian journalist. Sweet! source

Culture: “Bruno” trailer: “You may find this very hard to believe, but I’m gay”

After Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen’s back for more hijinks. This flick currently carries (and might deserve) an NC-17 rating. source
