Biz: Oh, the neverending love affair between advertisers and social media

  • How can it be wrong if it feels so good? Marketing companies are realizing more and more that when it comes to selling products, a blogger’s seal of approval can go a long way. The devil is in the details though. How exactly do they get their hands on the product in the first place? Culture: Well, that sucks. Appears major critics aren’t so hot on “Bruno”

  • cold The Washington Post’s Ann Hornaday, savaged Sacha Baron Cohen’s mock-doc, saying “the skits don’t add up to anything substantive, and even his swipes at U.S. politicians here seem gratuitously cruel.”
  • lukewarm While Colin Covert of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says Cohen’s latest is “a bit of a letdown” and notes that it feels padded, he still says “he’ll never run out of bigotry, idiocy and hypocrisy to spoof.”

Culture: How did Conan do last night in his “Tonight Show” debut?

  • one Newsweek’s Josh Alston sez he’s doing well. “Conan tears himself to shreds in such a deft manner, that it’s easy to forget that self-deprecation is actually a super-annoying personality trait.”
  • two New York Daily News critic David Hinckley noted how “Conan made it subtly clear that the new kid in town will be a little naughtier and that for better or worse, “Tonight” is now his ride.”
  • three David Letterman was perfectly goofy about the whole thing. “I’m still here,” he said “I knocked off another competitor.” He also said his mother noted how he didn’t get the “Tonight Show” gig again.
