Tech: USA Today: The iPad will be the first popular tablet computer

  • Edward Baig and Jefferson Graham of the newspaper both agree: The iPad is an amazing device. Graham, in the video above, notes some flaws, including the challenge of getting content on the device. But both seemed super-impressed, and in Baig’s case, he suggests that netbook creators may have to redesign their devices to compete: “They’ll have to adapt or disappear — especially since their price advantage compared with the entry-level iPad isn’t as great as some might have thought it would be.” (hat tip TUAW) source

Culture: Worse: “The Marriage Ref” or “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”?

  • Marriage Ref savaging Time Magazine ripped hard: “It was, at least, an interesting object lesson in how TV works. It proved that, if you are Jerry Seinfeld, NBC will put any program you want on the air, and will give you no network notes.”
  • Tonight Show tearing USA Today ripped harder: “Monday’s opening monologue, supposedly Leno’s strong suit, was tired, lame and unfunny. In other words, typical of the real Leno, rather than the Leno of public-relations imagination.”

Tech: Google’s Nexus One is starting to look a little like a debacle

  • sales Despite the massive waves of hype around the phone, it sold just 20,000 units in its first week. That hurts.
  • hype The big problem? It doesn’t have hype. There’s no Droid-like marketing push, which has led to weak sales.
  • reviews The phone has also had some iffy reviews, which have led to a perception that it’s evolutionary, not revolutionary. source
