Culture: Ferris Bueller Sells Out: Matthew Broderick’s Super Bowl ad

  • Bueller … Bueller … So, question for you all — is it awesome that Matthew Broderick’s reliving his faux-childhood memories, or just sad? “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” came out a solid 25 and a half years ago, and is arguably his crowning achievement (though “The Producers” on Broadway comes close). This early Super Bowl ad, which openly references “Bueller,” albeit with some modern touches, should remind you of two things: Matthew Broderick is going to be 50 in a little over a month, and a Honda CR-V is not a Ferrari. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? (By the way, when you’re done with this, Jerry Seinfeld also has a past-referencing car ad.) source

Politics: Birther drama: People who Donald Trump has pissed off lately

  • Letterman’s lashing out On a Thursday night episode of “The Late Show with David Letterman,” the host ripped into one of Trump’s friends, Dr. Phil, over Trump’s behavior in recent weeks. “It’s all fun, it’s all a circus, it’s all a rodeo, until it starts to smack of racism. And then it’s no longer fun,” he said. Letterman also noted that they may not bring Trump back on the show as a guest in the future over the birther stuff.
  • Seinfeld’s Charity drop-out The incident mirrors a recent decision by Jerry Seinfeld to not take part in a Trump-sponsored charity event. Rather than handle the real issue at hand, Trump went after Seinfeld’s admittedly terrible “The Marriage Ref.” “What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, ‘The Marriage Ref,'” he wrote, “even though I thought it was absolutely terrible.” Damn brah. source

Culture: The first and only time “The Marriage Ref” will ever be funny

  • OK Ricky, we admit it. We put crack in your drink. Pretty much everything about “The Marriage Ref” is stupid as heck, especially the fact that Jerry Seinfeld produced it, but at least the celebrities appearing on the show seem to realize it too. Ricky Gervais calls it “the weirdest show I’ve ever been on,” and is bewildered at his fellow celebrity guests – Larry David and Madonna. At least the celebrities agree that this show sucks. source

Culture: Worse: “The Marriage Ref” or “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”?

  • Marriage Ref savaging Time Magazine ripped hard: “It was, at least, an interesting object lesson in how TV works. It proved that, if you are Jerry Seinfeld, NBC will put any program you want on the air, and will give you no network notes.”
  • Tonight Show tearing USA Today ripped harder: “Monday’s opening monologue, supposedly Leno’s strong suit, was tired, lame and unfunny. In other words, typical of the real Leno, rather than the Leno of public-relations imagination.”

Culture: Jerry Seinfeld and his lack of business acumen support NBC

  • What did the network do to him? I don’t think anyone’s preventing people from watching Conan. Once they give you the cameras, it’s on you. I can’t blame NBC for having to move things around. I hope Conan stays, I think he’s terrific. But there’s no rules in show business, there’s no refs.
  • Comedian Jerry Seinfeld • Criticizing the idea of Conan O’Brien possibly switching to another network after the Jay Leno debacle. Seinfeld thinks that was a good idea too, saying, “I also think this was the right idea at the wrong time. I’m proud that NBC had the guts to try something.” Also, he made some weird comment about the AOL/Time Warner merger which made him sound like an idiot. Remember, this is the guy who did the terrible Microsoft commercials with Bill Gates. source

U.S.: Microsoft wants to be Apple, have its own retail outlets

  • Putting players in place Yesterday, MS named David Porter, a former Wal-Mart and Dreamworks Animation exec, as vice president of its retail stores. Taking a cue from Apple, the stores would sell computers with Microsoft software on them, as well as non-PC products like Zunes and Xboxes. Since starting their stores, Apple has made out like gangbusters and cut into MS’ market share.
  • What we imagine We think this could perhaps be the ninth layer of hell if done wrong. Just imagine – stores with Songsmith karaoke bars, walls lined with numerous versions of Windows, and repeated showings of those terrible Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates commercials on giant TV screens. And honestly, we’d be afraid of getting locked in the store overnight by a blue screen of death.
  • Bad timing?Yeah, nothing against the idea or anything, guys, but you realize we’re in a recession, right? You guys laid off people recently, too, so it’s not exactly like you should be unaware of this fact. And on top of that, one of your biggest retail outlets, Circuit City, bit the big one. Not to tell you not to do this, guys, but is this really the best use of your time? source
