Politics: Ex-Scientology official releases possible church enemies list

  • departure Marty Rathbun was at one time a high-ranking official within the Church of Scientology. He departed from this position in 2004, which probably didn’t earn him many friends — critics often accuse the Church of cutting off apostates from their families.
  • exposure Rathbun has released a PDF file which he claims originated from Scientology’s creepily-named Office of Special Affairs. If genuine, it reads like an enemies list. Given the Church’s record, expect a blanket denial and some attacks on Rathbun’s character soon. source

Politics: Trump follows Obama’s lead on birth certificates

  • zing! Donald Trump, in a bid for political attention, has wholly embraced the Birthers, going so far as to release his own certificate. “It took me one hour to get my birth certificate.” Way to one-up the President!
  • oops… What he released is not his real birth certificate, but rather one issued by the hospital, which is EXACTLY what Obama did. There’s something on that certificate Trump doesn’t want us to see! source

World: Released NYT journalists recount arrest horror

  • I heard in Arabic, ‘shoot them,’ and we all thought it was over.
  • New York Times foreign correspondent Anthony Shadid • Reflecting on his arrest, as well as his three NYT compatriots, at the hands of pro-Gaddafi forces in Libya. The story seems to indicate a reluctance Gaddafi’s people had to actually make good on that remark and shoot the journalists; upon realizing they were Americans, they thankfully scuttled that plan. Lynsey Addario got the worst treatment, having “every inch of [her] body” groped by the pro-Gaddafi soldiers, while photographer Tyler Hicks was threatened with decapitation. So, all in all, a pretty sickening story, and one that we hope people remember when somebody is mocking a journalist on the ground for feeling threatened. These are real dangers, folks. source

World: Arrested NYT journalists released by Libya unharmed

  • 4 New York Times journalists arrested in Libya have been released source
  • » Remember why journalism is a courageous job? Because every now and then, you risk getting arrested by forces loyal to a tinpot, crackpot dictator, in a country embroiled in violent revolution. Stephen Farrell, Anthony Shadid, Lynsey Addario and Tyler Hicks were all released today, reportedly unharmed, a full six days after they had been scooped up by pro-Gaddafi forces while covering the rebellion on the ground. Never a bad time to appreciate the risks that journalists, especially those reporting from war zones, take in order that we can be more informed.

Sports: Pacman Jones may get another Power Pellet from the Cowboys

  • Sure, he’s controversial, but they might give him another shot. In an interview Saturday night, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones asked a reporter, “Would you beat me up too bad if I brought back Adam?” Adam Pacman Jones, who was released in February, is infamous bordering on unusable for his off-the-field behavior. However, despite a six-game suspension last season, the Cowboys owner still might give him another shot, though he says it’s a long shot. Make up your mind, man. source
