Culture: Arizona school: Can you whiten up the black kid on this mural? (whoa)

  • We consistently, for two months, had people shouting racial slander from their cars. We had children painting with us, and here come these yells of (epithet for Blacks) and (epithet for Hispanics).
  • Prescott, Ariz. Downtown Mural Project director R.E. Wall • Regarding the ridiculous chain of events that led to the group lightening the skin of children depicted on a local elementary school’s mural. The mural, by the way, is trying to promote green transportation, and features pictures of KIDS AT THE SCHOOL. Wall says that he and others were depicted to racial slurs on a regular basis while painting the mural. While the school claimed it was only to fix shading, the controversy got so bad that a city councilman who hosts a radio show was trying to get the mural taken down. Real quote from Steve Blair: “To depict the biggest picture on the building as a Black person, I would have to ask the question: Why?” Holy crap. This is 2010. (Hat tip Carissa Wright) source

U.S.: Census 2010: The ever-evolving “What’s Your Race” question

  • Few questions are as controversial as the race question on the Census box. What’s surprising about it is that it started out as complicated (due to slavery), became simple again and then became complicated again (due to political correctness). Racebox.org has gathered all the census sheets from 1790 on. Great historical documents. source

Politics: Sarah Palin assumes everyone agrees with Arizona’s immigration law

  • It’s time for Americans across this great country to stand up and say ‘We’re all Arizonans now and, in clear unity, we say Mr. President, do your job, secure our border.’
  • Sarah Palin • In a speech stumping with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer designed to defend the state’s anti-illegal-immigration law. OK, let’s analyze this statement and how dumbheaded it is. The phrase “we’re all Arizonans now” suggests that nearly everyone agrees with this law. While many people favor it, there are lots of people that don’t, including many in the Latino community. Yet, she’s treating a law many are criticizing for reasons of racial profiling as if it’s a major populist statement. Populism doesn’t work with laws that divide the country, Sarah. Try this with abortion or gay rights and you’ll see what we’re getting at. source

Politics: “Hip-hop Republicans” not impressed with Tea Party’s evolution

  • It’s strayed away from the message of wasteful spending and Washington not listening to its constituents, and it’s become more of this rally of hate.
  • Black conservative Brandon Brice • Regarding the Tea Party movement. Brice, who labels himself a “hip-hop Republican,” says that the movement was a lot more diverse a year ago, and now it seems hateful and disrespectful to other races. Not every black conservative feels that way, but this does play into the movement’s image problem. 79 percent of Tea Partiers are white. 6 percent are black. source

Politics: Bob McDonnell is sorry if you’re offended he forgot about slavery

  • bad Breaking nearly a
    decade of tradition,
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell restarted the controversial practice of making April Confederate History Month.
  • worse In his proclamation, he forgot to mention that the Civil War had a lot to do with slavery and stuff (not just states’ rights), which is why it’s controversial in the first place.
  • oops Today, McDonnell
apologized (kinda): “I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed.” What about non-Virginians? source

Politics: Racism and rage: Did the Tea Party severely hurt their movement?

  • So I’m having a hard time tonight trying to believe almost uniformly white tea partiers are anything other than a racist, right-wing reaction to the election of an African American president who brings with him feminists and gays (even if he doesn’t do as much for them as they would ideally like).
  • Salon writer Joan Walsh • Regarding yesterday’s heated health care situation, where some awful Tea Party precedents hit their ugly head. First, Rep. John Lewis, a civil-rights hero, was called the N-word (which she repeated but we won’t) at least fifteen times. Second, fellow Congressional Black Caucus leader Rep. Emanuel Cleaver was spat on by a tea partier. Third, popular gay Rep. Barney Frank was called a “homo” and F-word (not that one, the other one) by the same folks. Finally, Rep. Louise Slaughter had a brick thrown through her congressional office in Niagra Falls. Dissent is one thing, but holy crap dudes. What does health care have to do with this? You did a lot to set your cause back yesterday. source

World: Think racism in South Africa is gone? Check out the bus system

Despite major strides in the wake of the 2010 World Cup, a fairly extreme form of racial segregation forces some people to travel long distances just to get to work. source
