World: We may never know why the Air France plane went down

  • The flight data recorders may be lost at sea forever. Noting that the crash happened in the middle of the ocean, investigators say it may be impossible to find. While the recorders give off a signal that lasts up to 30 days, they can’t find the signal because it’s floating underwater. France has sent a submersible to help find the signal. The depth of the Atlantic near where the wreckage was found is nearly 21,000 feet. source

World: The search for the missing Air France flight continues

  • They may have spotted some debris, but it’s too early to tell. It sounds like a total nightmare, but a giant plane falling into an ocean that dwarfs it makes for a crazy needle-in-haystack game. Fortunately, Brazilian air force craft have some leads in the form of debris 400 miles off the coast of the country. Sadly, the odds that they will find someone alive out of the the 228 passengers and crew are very low. The odds that a Portuguese Lost spin-off will happen in the wake of the crash are even lower. source

U.S.: The pilots in the Buffalo crash may as well have been slaves

  • $16,254 a year the amount co-pilot Rebecca Shaw made; she once had to augment the job with part-time work at a coffee shop in our former home town of Norfolk, Va. (please don’t be Fair Grounds … Yikes!) source

U.S.: Someone got the ax for that NYC Air Force One incident

  • Louis Caldera eats the blame for the incident. The Director of the White House Military Office, who spent much of the last two weeks in PR spin mode after the incident which he OK’d on his watch, turned in his resignation on Friday, saying he couldn’t do the job anymore in the wake of the incident. Obama was furious over the incident, which – let’s face it – was pretty stupid. source

U.S.: In case you’re curious, that Air Force One photo is coming soon

  • It only took scaring half of NYC to get it, BTW. The White House, which earlier this week made it sound like the photo of Air Force One flying next to the Statue of Liberty would never see the light of day, had a change of heart, according to press secretary Robert Gibbs, a.k.a. Mr. Awesome. By the way, the endeavor cost taxpayers $328,835 and angered thousands. Hoo-ray! source

Offbeat, U.S.: Why … yes, Air Force One just flew over the Statue of Liberty

  • No, Obama wasn’t on it. New Yorkers got a bit of a shock when they noticed a presidential plane flying over one of the nation’s most iconic figures this morning. The Air Force confirms that yes, Obama’s Air Force One backup plane flew over the Statue of Liberty this morning, but it was for a photo op. Thanks for ruining our dreams, Air Force. source

World: The day’s other big crash: A FedEx cargo plane in Japan (with video!)

Whoa. That’s freakin’ crazy! Let’s just say that we don’t like plane crashes. They suck. :( source

U.S.: The plane in the Buffalo crash was on autopilot

  • A big no-no With the conditions outside pretty cruddy, pilots flying to Buffalo needed to take extra care about ice on their planes’ wings. The National Transportation Safety Board tells them not to fly their planes on autopilot in such a situation. But the plane that crashed and killed 50 people was on autopilot, possibly violating federal safety recommendations. source

  • “Significant” ice buildup The pilots of the plane, who also died in the crash, were aware of the ice on the plane and discussed it shortly before the crash. Colgan Air, the operators of the plane, had installed deicing systems specifically for this purpose, but it’s unknown when the pilots chose to turn them on. In unrelated news, this guy is lucky he wasn’t on the plane. source
