Offbeat, World: Peruvian president blames low approval ratings on Peruvians

  • We are what we are: sad, distrustful … We have a natural lack of trust.
  • Peruvian President Alan Garcia • Suggesting he has a low approval rating (34 percent approve, 62 percent disapprove) because Peruvians are naturally unhappy. He suggests nearby countries, like Brazil, are happier. Way to flip the message. Are the people saying “BOO” or “BOO-urns”?  source

Yeah, let’s see how that one works out for you, buddy. source

U.S., World: Did the FBI give Joran van der Sloot his jetsetting money?

  • $250k the amount van der Sloot was reportedly trying to extort from Natalee Holloway’s family
  • $15k the amount the FBI reportedly wired to him to find out infomation on Holloway’s whereabouts
  • $10k the amount van der Sloot was reportedly given by hand and caught counting on video source
  • » What this all means: The FBI might have messed up the extortion case, giving the “Dutch playboy” (ABC’s words, not ours) the money to travel to Peru, where he ended up killing somebody else (per his confession). The FBI denies that they enabled him, but if they did, holy crap.

World: Joran van der Sloot’s reported victim, Stephany Flores, Googled him

  • I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life. She had no right. … I confronted her. She was frightened, we argued and she wanted to get away. I grabbed her by the neck and I hit her.
  • Joran van deer Sloot (reportedly) • In the confession to the murder in Peru in which he is the main suspect. How did Flores intrude into his life? She looked up his name on the Internet. The guy has a pretty rough Google profile, doesn’t he? As a result of the confession, by the way, search teams have been organized in Aruba just in case this guy has any further things to say about the Natalee Holloway case. source

World: Natalee Holloway’s family: Joran van der Sloot’s arrest not enough

  • We could have had the answers in the first couple of days down there had they done their job right. And this should have never happened what’s happened in Peru.
  • Natalee Holloway’s stepfather, “Jug” Twitty • Discussing the recent arrest of Joran van der Sloot, a former suspect in Holloway’s disappearance in Aruba in 2005. Twitty feels that political connections (van der Sloot was the son of a prominent judge in Aruba) allowed him to go free, which led to the recent death of Stephany Flores in Peru. The U.S. recently charged van der Sloot with extortion related to the Holloway case. source

U.S.: Wanted in Peru: A former Natalee Holloway disappearance suspect

  • 2005 In Aruba, Natalee Holloway went missing and is presumed dead. Dutch student Joran van der Sloot is a suspect, but evidence against him is weak.
  • 2008 After the case dragged on and on (and on – thanks Nancy Grace), prosecutors try and fail to re-arrest van der Sloot after new evidence surfaces.
  • 2010 In Peru, van der Sloot is the main suspect in the murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez, and this time, there’s sufficient evidence. She was found in his hotel room. source

World: Chile quake scary, but not an uncommon occurrence

  • Our hotel is built for this. In Chile, this happens many times.
  • Santiago, Chile, Hotel Kennedy employee Anita Herrera • Regarding the earthquake which just hit her country. While this quake is quite large, the country has lots of experience with large-scale quakes. The powerful 9.5-magnitude 1960 Valdiva Earthquake, for example, was so huge that it caused a tsunami that reached all the way to Alaska. From Chile. That quake left a huge death toll (as many as 6,000 dead). This one also forced a a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru. Our prayers go out to the country. source

World: Sick: Peruvian gang kills people for their fat for some reason

  • “We are not making this up. They have confessed to this. That’s what’s coming out now.” In case you’re Peruvian and were wondering where your fat friend went recently, it’s possible that he’s one of 60 people who may have been killed for his fat. Four gang members were arrested in the incredibly bizarre scheme, which reportedly netted them $15,000 per liter of fat from European labs. We smell a plot to a horror movie. source
