Culture: David Lynch to open “Club Silencio” in Paris

  • David Lynch opening predictably odd nightclub: Perhaps you’re familiar with filmmaker David Lynch, whose movies are broadly seen as prime examples of inscrutable, “outer-edge” American cinema — perhaps none quite as famous as 2001’s Mulholland Drive. Well, yesterday came word that Lynch is in the works of designing and opening “Club SIlencio,” a 1920’s style Parisian nightclub modeled after the Mulholland Drive location of the same name. We’ll be honest, this is rather shocking to us. We could imagine George Lucas opening a fake Mos Eisley Cantina, for example, but David Lynch’s “Club SIlencio?” Just too weird. source

World: The Ivory Coast nearly couped yesterday – in Paris, that is

These dudes are blocking off the Ivory Coast’s French embassy. Why? Supporters of should-be-winner Alassane Ouattara took it over for a bit yesterday. Uh-oh. source

Culture: Michael Jackson’s mom hits Oprah for first interview since his death

  • Why didn’t he take care of my child? Why did he give that [propofol] to him? It’s very dangerous; why did he do it? … I can’t accuse him of murder. I don’t know if it was accidentally done or it was intentionally done. I don’t want to get into that, but I have my thoughts.
  • Michael Jackson’s mom, Katherine • Explaining her feelings on Conrad Murray, the guy who administered the drugs that killed her ultra-famous son. Jackson was talking to Oprah today in her first interview since Jackson’s death, and the pop star’s kids were with her, too. She’s raising Paris, Prince Michael and Blanket, and didn’t like the way that her son was hiding them away from public view. Now, the trio is going to normal schools and living a relatively normal life. Hopefully they grow up to be a little less messed up than their father became. source

Culture: Slowly but surely, Michael Jackson’s kids becoming normal(ish)

  • They don’t have any friends. They don’t go to school, they have private lessons at home – but that will change in September, when they are due to enroll at private college.
  • Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson • On her grandkids’ future as actual human beings who may actually have friends. The three kids – Prince, Paris and (our favorite) Blanket – plan to go to school. RIght now, they spend their days hanging around and listening to their father’s music. They have big aspirations, though – Prince wants to produce movies and Paris is musically-inclined. And we’re pretty sure none of them own llamas yet. When they’re old enough to buy one, we know where they could get one on the black market. source

World: Jerks who ganked expensive paintings knew what they were doing

  • It seems as if they knew exactly what they were looking for and knew the value of each painting. There were two paintings by Modigliani hung next to each other and they took the more expensive.
  • Paris deputy mayor in charge of culture Christophe Girard • Regarding the theft of five paintings from the city’s Musée d’Art Moderne, which is out over €100 million as a result. The paintings were some great works of art by some name artists – Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger and Modigliani – whose paintings are so expensive that we’re surprised we didn’t get charged for typing their names. While a security system was on the fritz, Girard made it clear that the problem with the alarms wasn’t enough to pull off the heist, as the museum’s security has a lot of redundancy. It’s possible that it might’ve been an inside job. source

World: Manuel Noriega still in custody, but pretty well-traveled

  • Panama Noriega became de facto ruler in 1983 and, while in power was accused
of election rigging and drug trafficking.
  • Miami After he was captured
by the U.S., where he was convicted for drug trafficking, he was jailed for over 20 years.
  • Paris In 1999, Noriega was convicted in absentia on money laundering charges. He just got extradited today. source

Offbeat: Fighting Paris suburbs pit two one-way streets against each other

  • The conservative French suburb of Levallois-Perret, annoyed by the large amounts of traffic coming from the city, made one of its major roads a one way street, which is kind of selfish. source
  • In response to the traffic buildup caused, a neighboring suburb, Clichy-la-Garenne, made traffic go the other way on the road. At the two towns’ borders, chaos ensued. Yikes. source

Culture: Michael Jackson’s death a homicide: The news cycle explodes again.

  • The L.A. Coroner’s office says Michael Jackson (who still hasn’t been buried yet) was given a lethal dose of propofol, which he was taking to help him sleep. source
  • Considering that his daughter, Paris, didn’t inject her dad with a huge dose of a powerful sedative, Dr. Conrad Murray is probably the main suspect. source

World: A sad ending to the Air France missing plane saga

  • The last bit of hope that we had no longer exists … Before a lot of us were hoping that the plane could have landed on an island or something like that, but no more.
  • Aldair Gomes • Whose son was on the Air France plane that went missing earlier this week. The Brazilian army found the wreckage earlier today, and later confirmed what was likely but feared: The plane crashed into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in bad weather, and everyone on board – 228 people – probably died. It’s the worst tragedy in Air France’s 75-year history. • source
