World: Israel (partly) expands the list of things that can go into Gaza

  • <200 number of things that were allowed on the old list
  • 1,000’s number of things that are banned on the new list source
  • » Notable omissions: While food and household cleaning items made the cut, building supplies did not. Lumber, concrete, steel and other supplies necessary for Gaza to rebuild its infrastructure did not make the list. Why? Because Israel wants to ensure they can’t build bunkers or rockets. Or, you know, buildings, roads and basic infrastructure.

Politics: Charles Schumer justifies Gaza blockade with straight-wrong facts

  • Yo, Charles, what happened? The New York Senator, who is Jewish, woefully misinformed a Orthodox Union crowd by saying that most Palestinians don’t support a two-state solution in Israel. Actually, they do. By using this train of thought, he gets to this conclusion: “Since the Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas, while certainly there should be humanitarian aid and people not starving to death, to strangle them economically until they see that’s not the way to go, makes sense.” It’s no Helen Thomas-level gaffe, sure, but what an awful justification. source

Politics: Helen Thomas may be getting too old for this line of work

  • This controversy is not going away. After Thomas said in the above clip that the Israelis should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go back to Germany or Poland, she was dropped by her speaking agency. While she’s still got her position as dean of the White House Press Corps, she’s lost a number of connections as a result of this statement. Journalist Craig Crawford, who recently worked on a book with Thomas, won’t work on any others. Former reps from both the Clinton and Bush administrations (including Ari Fleischer, who’s Jewish and “used to like her”) have thrown her under the bus. Yikes. We can’t support this, either. Bad move, Helen. source

World: Israel kills a bunch of pro-Palestinian activists, pisses off Turkey

  • A very harrowing clip to watch. Israel just stepped in it, big time. For the last three years, Israel has been enforcing a blockade on the Hamas-led Gaza Strip. When a series of ships from Turkey full of activists and supplies tried to get past the blockade, the situation got incredibly violent, with at least ten deaths. Now Israel has completely pissed off their only Muslim ally in the Middle East, along with much of the rest of the world. source

World: Israeli West Bank settlement drama partly an economic thang

  • Real estate prices on the west side of the fence are the lowest, security arrangements are better than on the east side and (offer) better access to the major cities allows settlers to work in Israel.
  • A analysis piece by the Tel Aviv Macro Centre for Political Economics • Regarding why settlement-building in the West Bank is still an ongoing thing, with 6,657 new structures since 2004 alone. While the U.S. and EU say that the buildings get in the way of peace talks (and have caused the country’s latest blow-up), it’s notable that the structures often have significant economic benefits (that have nothing to do with a land debate), too. “Israelis do not want to live beyond the separation barrier” splitting the east and west sides of the West Bank, the report also notes. source

World: Benny Netanyahu: We done (#^&(@ up that settlement thang

The Israeli Prime Minister admits it was a bad idea – “It was hurtful and certainly it should not have happened” – but won’t back down in the row with the U.S. source

World: Israel learns building stuff on the West Bank unpopular with the U.S.

  • Yesterday the decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem undermines that very trust, the trust that we need right now in order to begin … profitable negotiations.
  • Vice President Joe Biden (in tandem with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas) • Regarding Israel’s decision to begin building Jewish settlements on the West Bank, which was great timing because Joe-boy just happened to be in town. Abbas wants Israel to reverse its decision. This is also bad because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put a halt to all housing starts for ten months back in November. For those playing at home, it hasn’t been ten months. And Netanyahu is pissed. source
