U.S.: Protip: If you’re on death row, hide your veins really well

  • Romell Broom’s execution was delayed because they couldn’t find a vein. Of all the bizarre reasons to avoid an execution, Broom’s may be the most bizarre. Broom, convicted for the 1984 rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl, was to be executed today in Ohio, but could not be because they could not find a vein after looking for two hours. Governor Ted Strickland then gave him a one-week reprieve, during which time, those veins better come out. source

U.S.: Excessive police force on YouTube, example No. 2,307,539

  • Police brutality is easier to track thanks to YouTube. In this video, a police officer at a Wal-Mart slammed an elderly woman to the ground. Which seems a wee bet excessive, due to the fact that, well, it’s an old woman. She was carrying a knife, yes, but this doesn’t seem to be the best way to handle something like this.source

Sports: LeBron comes clean about his high-school hijinks in a new book

  • Was the vehicle excessive, with its bank of three televisions? Maybe. Probably. Of course it was. So were the BMWs parked in the St. V lot, belonging to fellow students. But nobody ever questioned those.
  • LeBron James • Defending his mother’s purchase of (and acquiring of a $50,000 loan to help pay for) a Hummer. James was under heavy scrutiny at the time, as something of a “chosen one” at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio who had already appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In his book, “Shooting Stars,” out this fall, James also admits to smoking pot with his teammates in a hotel room one night. “Stars” was co-written with Buzz Bissinger, who wrote a book you might know better for its TV show and movie adaptations – “Friday Night Lights.” • source

Biz, U.S.: Need startup funding? Look no further than, uh, Kalamazoo

  • Silicon Valley’s drying up Despite the bevy of great ideas out there, one area can apparently handle so many great ideas, and venture capital in Silicon Valley is starting to dry up. And we’re in the Internet era, remember. You can be innovative anywhere! source

  • Toledo’s giving grants Fortunately for startups willing to move their entire business to the Midwest, municipal governments are offering to give significant financial help. But those purses close if they’re not willing to invest in the community. source

  • Rust belt tax breaks You can guess why cities in Ohio and Michigan are so aggressive about getting tech companies in their cities – two good reasons, in fact, GM and Chrysler. Which is why they want startups to stick around. No fly-by-nights. source

U.S.: Yo Republicans: Obama ain’t backing down from his policies

  • This country has never responded to a crisis by sitting on the sidelines and hoping for the best. We have a responsibility to act, and that’s what I intend to do.
  • President Barack Obama • At an Ohio graduation ceremony for police recruits, whose jobs were saved by his stimulus plan. Obama’s been facing tough criticism from Republicans lately over the stimulus package. • source
