Politics: Obama better watch out for “Generic Republican” in 2012

  • However, it is a problem for Republicans that no actual Republican can approach the performance of the generic candidate, probably because the generic candidate is Rorschach blot that allows each respondent to create what amounts to their fantasy candidate.
  • FiveThirtyEight blogger Nate Silver • Making a very astute point based on early polling for the 2012 presidential election. Essentially, while a “generic” Republican candidate can handily beat Obama right now, according to a compilation of polls he put together, no flesh-and-blood candidate can actually get close to that mark right now. The closest is Mitt Romney, who is less than six points behind. Sarah Palin, however, would be a wash, as she trails Obama by 14.4 points. Granted, it’s still very early (as Silver notes), and a lot can change, but that’s a fairly interesting signifying point. source

  • 75% of people in Obama’s foreclosure-prevention plan owe more than their homes are worth
  • 50% of people owe more than
25 percent in negative equity on
    their homes; crazy source

Politics: World leaders just can’t get enough of Barack Obama!

  • Jeez, can you make it any less obvious you’re talking about Bush? The Atlantic Wire notes that, despite Obama’s 47 percent approval rating in the States (his lowest point ever), world leaders can’t seem to get enough of him. Russian president Medvedev puts it this way: “He’s very comfortable partner, it’s very interesting to be with him.” Does Michelle know? source

U.S.: Obama’s gonna have fun filling John Paul Stevens’ shoes

  • 35 number of years John Paul Stevens served on the Supreme Court; Obama says “he leaves at the top of his game”
  • ten the number of names on
Obama’s replacement list (we hope one is John Paul Jones, just for spits and giggles) source

Politics: Obama knows how to make Sarah Palin sound like a friggin’ fool

  • I really have no response, because last I checked, Sarah Palin’s not much of an expert on nuclear issues.
  • President Barack Obama • Speaking to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in the wake of the Nuclear Posture Review, which as we noted earlier, is being incorrectly portrayed by some (including Palin) as out of lockstep with prior U.S. diplomatic policy. Obama, who built his nuclear policy with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, got in another rip on the former vice-presidential candidate, too: “I’m probably going to take my advice from them, and not from Sarah Palin.” Ouch. source

Politics: The Daily Show: Obama’s, Reagan’s nuclear policy the same

  • Just don’t let Fox News tell you otherwise. It’s kind of sad/hilarious that Jon Stewart has to point out the blatant lying taking place on Fox regarding Obama’s nuclear policy. Newt Gingrich and Sean Hannity, in particular, are bold-faced in their dishonesty.

U.S., World: U.S., Russia hang out, catch up, sign big-deal nuclear pact

  • “Hey Dmitry, I’m already here, might as well sign this thang!” While you were being completely unproductive this morning, playing Farmville and catching up on “Saved By the Bell” reruns, our boy Obama was signing a treaty with Dmitry Medvedev to severely scale back both countries’ nuclear ambitions. It’s the first arms treaty the two countries have signed in about 20 years. You should follow his example. source

U.S.: Obama decides to fix U.S.’s Nuclear Posture, cut back big time

  • We are going to want to make sure that we can continue to move towards less emphasis on nuclear weapons … [and to] make sure that our conventional weapons capability is an effective deterrent in all but the most extreme circumstances.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing his decision to scale back the nation’s nuclear powers, limiting exactly when the weapons can be used. Don’t think he’s going to go all soft on us, though. He’s leaving an exception for “outliers like Iran and North Korea” just in case they decide to try any funny stuff. You know, like threatening to drop a nuke on the U.S. source

Culture: Kal Penn: “Harold & Kumar 3” beats working for Obama

  • I’m hurt and offended that you didn’t ask whether the million dollar Hollywood contracts were calling for me. I have not accepted any such contract at this point.
  • White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee • Discussing (in hilariously deadpan terms) the fate of actor-turned-staffer Kal Penn, who is reportedly quitting his position as the White House’s associate director of public engagement to do a Christmas-themed “Harold and Kumar” movie (which may be in 3D). Which is seriously the best reason to quit any job, ever – actually, we take that back. The best reason to quit any job, ever, is to leave “House” to become the White House’s associate director of public engagement. Kal Penn seriously has the best resume ever. source
