Tech: Google FastFlip: They’re trying to make us obsolete, guys!

Many news Web sites load really slow (including ours – we swear, we’re working on it!), which is why Google’s trying to make reading online more magazine-like. source

Tech: Got a Fwix on a big story? There’s an iPhone app for that

  • Journalism now fits in your pocket. With a new iPhone app coming this week, hyperlocal startup Fwix is ready to get in on the journalism-as-it-happens game. The app allows regular people to file news reports (which can include photos and videos) onto the company’s Web site, allowing for a kind of journalism that Twitter kind of allows already, but pushed even further. Are we replacing professional journalists with iPhone apps? Good question. Maybe a necessary one to ask. source

Tech: Slate cuts the crap, just gives you the Slatest news, simply.

  • And good for them. Really. OK, we’re kinda sad because it appears they’ve stolen our idea to some degree, but Slate’s newest site, The Slatest, is a news aggregator that doesn’t get bogged down by lots and lots (and lots) of links, like, say, Digg, Reddit, The Huffington Post, The Drudge Report, and … we could go on. A handful of really good news stories, linked in such a way that you know what you’re clicking, with a giant freaking ad that doesn’t get in the way. We approve. Good show, Slate. source

Tech: Are you a journalist/hacker? Y Combinator wants you

  • What would a content site look like if you started from how to make money—as print media once did—instead of taking a particular form of journalism as a given and treating how to make money from it as an afterthought?
  • Y Combinator • Making a request for startups related to journalism. The site makes the argument that the reason that newspapers and magazines are unsuccessful in this economy is that their business model “is too far from their current model for them to reach it in time.” The opportunity sounds like just the kind of thing for just-out-of-college types. If they pick you, you get a limited amount of money, with the idea being the the best ideas come from freedom, and less money means more freedom. If you’re fresh out of college and have a couple of smart buddies, why even try for newspapers right now? Go for this. • source
