Politics: NYT: Maybe it’s time we flip the rich-get-richer culture on its head

  • If some company is too big to fail, then it’s too big to exist. Break it up.
  • New York Times op-ed columnist Bob Herbert • In an article titled “Safety Nets for the Rich,” about the phenomenon of companies “too big to fail.” Herbert argues that much money is being given to the rich instead of the poor, and it’s causing crazy situations like the financial bailout. Now that the economy’s starting to even out, perhaps it’s time to consider working on financial industry regulation. • source

World: Kidnapped New York Times reporter David Rohde tells his story

  • I thought of my wife and family and was overcome with shame. An interview that seemed crucial hours earlier now seemed absurd and reckless.
  • New York Times reporter David S. Rohde • Describing the situation that led to his capture by the Taliban in Afghanistan last year. Rohde, investigative journalist he is, is writing in-depth about his experience this week for the Times. You might remember the incident as the one Wikipedia hid on purpose to avoid it leaking to the mainstream media. Rohde’s story will be spilling onto the site all week. Block off some time to read it – it’s not often a reporter returns from such circumstances largely unharmed. • source

Politics: Everyone’s a marketer: Why the FTC’s new blogging rules stink

  • Regulating every last one of us in our tiny, imaginary boardrooms (in my mind, mine is mahogany-paneled and has a Häagen-Dasz fountain) is as ludicrous as not skipping past the advertisements on one’s DVR.
  • TheAwl.com co-founder Choire Sicha • Discussing in the New York Times why the FTC’s blogger marketing disclosure regulations are silly. His argument? We’ve reached a point where everyone is a marketer without even realizing it. Really? We thought it was to keep these guys in check. • source

Politics: Problematic: The New York Times missed ACORN – and Van Jones

  • They didn’t cover ACORN until it was simmering for a full week. NYT Public Editor Clark Hoyt put up an article this weekend picking up the pieces left by the paper essentially ignoring two of the biggest news stories of the last month – the resignation of Van Jones and Congress’ removal of ACORN’s federal funding. Apparently, it’s become clear that editors at the paper don’t watch Fox News. “Some stories, lacking facts, never catch fire,” Hoyt writes. “But others do, and a newspaper like The Times needs to be alert to them or wind up looking clueless or, worse, partisan itself.” The solution? Have an editor follow the blogosphere drama beat. source

Biz: We wish were were important enough bloggers to topple Ben Stein

  • It’s simply unconscionable for a newspaper of record to employ … someone who is surely making a vast amount of money by luring the unsuspecting into overpaying for a financial product they should under no circumstances buy.
  • Reuters financial blogger Felix Salmon • On Ben Stein, who was double-dipping by being a financial columnist for the New York Times AND doing ads for Freescore.com. Salmon, who at the time of the comments claimed to have no influence, had been trashing on Stein’s column since 2007, but said that the commercial pushed it over the edge. But as a result of Salmon’s criticism, Stein WAS fired from the Times for the commercials. Score one for bloggers who think they have no influence. • source

Tech: Protip: Don’t click on that New York Times antivirus ad

  • Some NYTimes.com readers have seen a pop-up box warning them about a virus and directing them to a site that claims to offer antivirus software. We believe this was generated by an unauthorized advertisement and are working to prevent the problem from recurring.
  • A note from the New York Times • Informing readers of a malware ad that the site was offering up. Mac users obviously weren’t affected, but some pretty nasty, scary stuff happened to PC users. • source

World: People are pointing fingers in the Stephen Farrell rescue

  • Gordon Brown’s hearing it after people died. On the plus side, New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell was rescued after just a few days of captivity in Afghanistan. But it came at a deadly cost – beyond Farrell’s interpreter and two Afghan civilians, a British paratrooper was killed. Which means that, since Prime Minister Gordon Brown reportedly gave the final OK, he’s also getting the drama over it. After the fact, though, Brown’s denying it – he says he was only consulted. Hmmmmmmm. source
