The assistant principal died last night of H1N1. In Hollis, Queens, students are mourning the death of Mitchell Wiener to swine flu – making him the fifth overall death in the U.S. and the first in New York City. He had been in the hospital in critical condition for half a week beforehand. So basically, this is very sad. source
He’s on a ventilator in a hospital. Jesus. Mitch Weiner, who has worked for the district for about three decades, is NYC’s most serious case of swine flu so far. The assistant principal is critically ill. His school, and two others, will be closed until the bug dies down a little more. In case you’re wondering, swine flu is still scary, but its scariness rises and falls based on the hour. source
Louis Caldera eats the blame for the incident. The Director of the White House Military Office, who spent much of the last two weeks in PR spin mode after the incident which he OK’d on his watch, turned in his resignation on Friday, saying he couldn’t do the job anymore in the wake of the incident. Obama was furious over the incident, which – let’s face it – was pretty stupid. source
It only took scaring half of NYC to get it, BTW. The White House, which earlier this week made it sound like the photo of Air Force One flying next to the Statue of Liberty would never see the light of day, had a change of heart, according to press secretary Robert Gibbs, a.k.a. Mr. Awesome. By the way, the endeavor cost taxpayers $328,835 and angered thousands. Hoo-ray! source
Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption.
