Sports: Why we loooooove Charles Barkley, reason No. 353,759

  • While Charles often makes jokes about his producer during our telecasts, he used poor judgment on Saturday during our NBA coverage. His comment was inappropriate and TNT apologizes to our viewers. We have spoken with Charles privately about it and will not have any further comment.
  • TNT • In a statement about their NBA coverage and its greatest asset, Charles Barkley, who, despite the DUI and the golf swing, is pretty much the coolest former NBA star ever. He called his producer a five-letter word that starts with a “p” on air, and he gets a slap on the wrist. That rules. • source

Sports: UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough to haters: Screw you, I’m still hot

  • I’m not worried about it. It’s just a bunch of people saying whatever they want. I think I’ll prove a lot of people wrong.
  • North Carolina superstar and future NBA draft pick Tyler Hansbrough • On his chances of replicating his success at UNC in the NBA. Hansbrough, the 2008 Naismith and Wooden awards winner, thinks that his style of play might actually be better-suited to the NBA due to the fact that there’s more one-on-one defending, while in college he “had three people guarding me for the past three years.” • source

  • Oklahoma City gets a chance to build a legacy with this spiffy pick. source
  • Despite having a 25% chance at the top pick, Sacramento fell here. That sucks. source

Sports: Congrats to the Bahstin Celtics for blowing it to the Orlando Magic

  • “Every time we got it down to seven or four they made another big shot,” said Doc Rivers. “I mean, they’re a hell of a basketball team, and they played probably their best game.”
  • Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers • Whose team went from force of nature to merely pretty good in the last year. Granted, losing Kevin Garnett to injury didn’t help their cause, but let’s just say we expected better of them. • source

Sports, U.S.: Detroit’s mayor a former Piston: Dave Bing to be sworn in

  • The NBA legend is the city’s third mayor in eight months. Bing, pretty much the Pistons’ biggest star before the Chuck Daly era, will be sworn in today after winning a special runoff election over incumbent Ken Cockrel Jr. Both men were vying to finish out the waning months of the second term of Kwame Kilpatrick, who was brought down in a very public scandal. Bing hopes to run for a full term next year. source

Sports: Feel-good story of the day: The Rockets beat the Lakers sans Yao

  • The Lakers knew this could happen. And it did. Down 2-1 in the Western Conference semifinals and lacking a true center (let alone superstar Yao Ming, who’s out with a foot fracture), the Houston Rockets managed to put the L.A. Lakers in their place for at least one game, winning 99-87. “There’s absolutely no surprise,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. The Rockets famously fought off adversity last season, pulling off a massive winning streak while Ming was on the injured list. The true test, of course, will be if the Rockets win the series. source

Sports: An ode to one of our heroes, Detroit Pistons coach Chuck Daly

  • Back in the late 1980s, we were glued to our TV sets whenever the Detroit Pistons were on. We watched a team that had a solid nucleus and a rep for physical play as they won the NBA finals twice. They were the Bad Boys. source
  • None of this would have happened without Chuck Daly. Daly was the guy responsible for much of the team’s success – they never had back-to-back winning seasons before he started coaching the Bad Boys. He ruled. source
  • Sure, there were other players – Joe Dumars, Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer – but really, he was the glue that held them together. Daly died this morning at 78. His legacy is one of the greatest in basketball history. source
