U.S.: Republicans in Mississippi ambivalent about outcome of Civil War

  • 38% of Mississippi GOPers wish the South had won source
  • » There’s more: If you include the 41% that’s undecided, you get a whopping 79% of Mississippi Republicans who aren’t quite ready to throw their support behind Abraham Lincoln circa 1861. Also, 9% of African Americans in the state aren’t sure whether they like the NAACP more than the KKK; surely, this is the result of a typo, or some sort of methodological error, or perhaps a psychoactive pollutant in the drinking water. Oh well; at least 54% of the state agrees that interracial marriage shouldn’t be illegal. That’s right, a whole 54%!

Politics: I won’t back down, part 3: Shirley Sherrod’s Breitbart lawsuit

  • This oughta be a fun lawsuit. And Sherrod plans to make the most of it. When asked about it at a meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists in San Diego, she said she definitely would, adding this little bit at the end: “What do I have to be afraid of?” This led to this downright classic near-instant response from Brent Bozell of the Media Research Council and Breitbart precursor Newsbusters: “Andrew Breitbart is going to be fine. He’s done nothing wrong. I wonder if Ms. Sherrod, who is such a champion of transparency, will publicly disclose who is putting her up to this.” OMG shut up nobody cares douchebag. source

Politics: Tea Party Express ditches Mark Williams over really misguided idea

  • Dumb move by mark williams In response to the NAACP’s chiding of the Tea Party, Tea Party Express leader Mark WIlliams wrote a blog post in the guise of a slave pretending to thank Abraham Lincoln for slavery. He called it satire. It was universally criticized, even by his own side.
  • Smart move by mark williams Realizing that the post was really dumb and hurt the Modern Tea Party movement as a whole, Williams resigned from the Tea Party Express. He says he’ll still remain part of the movement, but not hog the spotlight as its most well-known member. It’s for the best. source

Politics: Democrat Walt Minnick: I don’t need Tea Party endorsement

The Idaho congressman, the only Democrat endorsed by Tea Party Express, declined their help. It’s official. Mark Williams is political suicide. Get it away! source

Politics: Max Headroom: Mitch McConnell embraces “Party of No” rhetoric

  • Mitch explains himselfSenate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it’s honorable to be the “Party of No” (and proudly so). He makes a lot of arguments here, but the most annoying one is the one about the FCC regulating the internet. How the hell did net neutrality turn into that description?

  • Alvin Greene stays steady The most awkward Senate candidate in the history of the world actually managed to hold it together for six solid minutes today during a speech to his local NAACP. Which is honestly better than we’d do. We’d turn into a puddle of sweat quicker than that.

  • Mark Williams is an idiotAnd yet, CNN continually brings him on their network. Roland S. Martin is having none of Williams’ incendiary remarks with their loopy logic and moronic conclusions. If this guy is one of the leaders of the movement, the movement needs a new leader or two.

Politics: Black leaders distance themselves from NAACP’s Tea Party criticism

  • one Jesse Jackson calls the attention on the criticism a distraction from numerous bigger issues.
  • two Al Sharpton says that the NAACP has allowed the Modern Tea Party to have center stage.
  • three NAACP president Ben Jealous says it was a tiny part of everything he said. A tiny part! source

Politics: Speaking of the NAACP, they have Alvin Greene on tap. Yes, that one.

  • It’s his first public appearance in a bizarrely successful campaign. South Carolina’s Democratic nominee for the Senate will address the Manning chapter of the NAACP on Sunday. And he even has some support from the people who initially didn’t know who he was. “The word in the barbershop, the word on the street, the word in the church parking lots is that everyone is pulling for him,” said Manning NAACP President Robert Fleming. Great he has some support, but if he beats Jim DeMint, color us shocked. source

Politics: The NAACP wants a Tea Party fight, and some “Tea Party” thoughts

  • I’m busy today so notify me asap when NAACP renders verdict: are liberty-loving, equality-respecting patriots racist? Bated breath, waiting …
  • Sarah Palin • Tweeting about the anticipated move by the NAACP to denounce the Modern Tea Party Movement* for “explicitly racist behavior.” Not often we say this, but … Palin’s right. Yo, NAACP, what happened to setting the example instead of playing angry reactionary? You guys are a pretty effective weapon in the war on racism, but if you’re using it to play politics, it will not work out for you. It seems as pathetic as boycotting a greeting card that sounds like something it obviously isn’t. source

* – After a little soul-searching and some feedback from fellow readers, we’ve chosen to revert back to referring to the Tea Party Movement as such, leaving “bizarro hippies” as a part of our past and adding the word “Modern” in front of “Tea Party,” which should get around the problem that the name creates – that it disregards and usurps the memory of the original Boston Tea Party. Let’s admit it. It was intended as a lighthearted joke but some readers didn’t take it that way.

Politics: NAACP takes the PETA route to irrelevancy, apparently

  • A talking greeting card that is clearly labeled as being about space used the phrase “black holes.” The NAACP for some reason thought it sounded like something else. Now they want a formal apology. Dudes, do you remember why people laugh at PETA? It’s because of stuff like this. You guys have a stellar reputation. Why waste it on stuff like this? To its credit, Hallmark pulled the card, despite the fact that they had a pretty sound case for ignoring the claim. source
