Biz, Tech: Small businesses make out like bandits on the Twitter bandwagon

  • I would love to say that I just had a really good idea and strategy, but Twitter has been pretty essential to my success.
  • Curtis Kimball • The owner of a crème brûlée cart in San Francisco, on how Twitter has managed to build his side business into something that no longer requires him to keep his day job. He’s not alone. In fact, Mashable recently ran a neat little feature on how food cart owners have been using Twitter to stand out from the pack. But even beyond that, small businesses are using the site to market goods, find related businesses to partner with and talk directly to consumers. • source

Biz: Oh, the neverending love affair between advertisers and social media

  • How can it be wrong if it feels so good? Marketing companies are realizing more and more that when it comes to selling products, a blogger’s seal of approval can go a long way. The devil is in the details though. How exactly do they get their hands on the product in the first place? The Federal Trade Commission wants to know, and might make it mandatory for online media publishing testimonials and reviews to disclose how they got the goods. source

Culture: A movie with Zooey Deschanel can just market itself, right? Wrong.

500summer0702
  • It’s apparently a lot of work to convince the disaffected to go see a movie about disaffected people, like “500 Days of Summer.” It doesn’t even matter if those disaffected are the kid from “3rd Rock From the Sun” (who doesn’t really pull off that Joy Division shirt) and the girl from “She & Him” who’s engaged to Ben Gibbard. source

Biz: KFC looking for new spokesman; must like whatever the “C” stands for

  • Is the Colonel is getting klinked? Perhaps as recovery from the spectacular failure of their last marketing campaign, KFC is trying to find the new face of their company. To do so, they’re going to MySpace (uhhhh, isn’t everyone who isn’t in a band on Facebook?) and asking for videos until July 7. The winner gets a free lifetime supply of chicken and a free heart attack 15 years from now. source

Offbeat: Your business card isn’t as cool as this guy’s.

  • “It doesn’t fit in a rolodex because it doesn’t belong in a rolodex.” This may perhaps be our all-time favorite video on YouTube, because we like rewarding idiots for their idiocy. source

U.S.: “Organic” isn’t as organic as you’d think

  • It doesn’t matter if it’s from the farm down the road or from Chile. As long as it meets the standards it’s organic.
  • Joan Shaffer • A spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department, on the nature of the “U.S.D.A. Organic” program, which she describes as a marketing program. It’s not local and the standards often leave small farmers off the table. Doesn’t that make you want to eat organic? • source
