Tech: Now you feel old: Super Mario Bros. turns 25 today

  • Happy birthday, brah! 25 years ago today, the greatest video game of any generation, “Super Mario Bros.” was released upon the world. With its iconic imagery (which is still often a target of parody and admiration today) and its trendsetting gameplay, pretty much any game with even a minor dash of depth to it owes something to “Super Mario Bros.” for proving it was possible. Still one of our favorite things about life in general. source

Offbeat: Japanese students get bored, recreate Mario in classrooms

  • Protip: If you want us to post a video of something you’ve done, just add Mario. It’s like an instant draw for some stupid reason.

Tech: Someone remade a Queen song using a Super Mario World level

  • Well, that’s one way to pay tribute to Freddie Mercury. A crafty “Super Mario World” level hacker (who also knows their way around automation) managed to craft “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Guitar Hero”-style, using a platformer. Awesome, but nerdy.

Tech: Artificial Intelligence powers up again, shoots fireballs at goombas

  • It’s a-him, mario! If you’re like us, you feel that the Super Mario Bros. games are a pinnacle of human achievement – challenging games that still hold up to this day. We think all resources should go to building a better Mario, though. While Big Blue was neat, screw chess. We want computers that kick butt at Mario. source

  • The AI challenge Smart people agree with us apparently, because the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society is holding a competition where they plan on giving out a $500 prize to the designer of the most capable artificially intelligent Mario bot. Which could be transferred to other games eventually. source

  • You should play this Obviously, you’re human and aren’t a better Mario, but you can still play the game the competition’s based on – the awesome, completely randomized Java-based game Infinite Mario Bros. We know we couldn’t stop playing, and we suck at video games worse than we do at dating! source

Offbeat: We got these fireworks from South of the Border

Weird part? They were shaped like mushrooms. They don’t make a huge blast, and that blast sounds … uh, pixelated. But happy 4th, everyone! source

Culture: The Conan/Mario thing is a coincidence, you big-media idiots

  • OMG are you guys seriously that stupid? Look, we get it. The Conan thing is freaking hilarious. We love it like a child of our own, in fact. (W’zup Jeff Greco?!) But we noticed something when looking on the Internet today: More than one big-media blog trying to set the record straight on what is seriously the most awesome coincidence ever. Syfy’s official blog, for example. Or more depressingly, The Live Feed, The Hollywood Reporter’s usually awesome TV blog. You guys need to take a step back from the mirror and realize it’s, on its face, hilarious. OK? Now read this story on how Nintendo digs it. source

  • The guy who put this together is a bloody genius and we want to have a couple dozen of his digital manbabies. LOL. Obviously a well-placed coincidence, but still amazing.source
