Politics: Max Headroom: Mark Zuckerberg softens up in the PR machine

  • So, what’s new? This morning, Republican Rep. Mike Pence found himself in the somewhat undesirable spot of explaining how the Republican’s “Pledge to America” was different from the plans they’ve sold in the past. Blame Jon Stewart.
  • Not-so-double-standard Our boy Fareed Zakaria had a pretty good point regarding some of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s criticism of the U.S., specifically with the death penalty – simply put, Iran is a really big pot calling a relatively small kettle black.
  • Not such a bad guy!As Oprah proved on her show, that Mark Zuckerberg guy isn’t such a jerk. See? He’s going to Japan with his beautiful girlfriend! He lets people skateboard on the job! How could this guy be the subject of an Aaron Sorkin hit piece?

World: Three crazy things Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said at the UN today

  • one9/11 took place in part “to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East in order to save the Zionist regime.”
  • twoAhmadinejad says “The majority of the American people as well as most nations and politicians around the world agree with this view.”
  • three“It was carried out by a terrorist group but that the American government supported and took advantage of the situation.” source
  • » The craziest part?: Ahmadinejad said these things one right after the other, in succession. For understandable reasons, the U.S. and a few other countries walked out on him. What a tactless scumbag, what with his conspiracy theories and all.

World: Iran hostages: Ahmadinejad wants the U.S. to scratch his back

  • From a moral viewpoint, there is an expectation that the US takes a step … There is an expectation in public opinion to release some of them.
  • Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Suggesting that he might let the other two hikers go if the U.S. lets go some of the Iranian hostages they’re holding. At last count, Iran said that 11 hostages were in U.S. custody. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a pretty good response to Ahmadinejad’s request, regarding the other two hikers still being held: “It would be a very significant humanitarian gesture for the Iranians to release them as well,” she said. Oh, come on! Nobody expects it to be that easy! source

World: So, Iran’s ready to free detained hiker after all apparently

  • Blame the delay on a power struggle. Apparently Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wanted to release Sarah Shourd to prove his country respected the “dignity” of women. Other top leaders reportedly complained about his reasoning. So now, Shourd will reportedly be let go on $500,000 bail and can leave the country, but will have to return for trial to face spying charges (fat chance). She can now reportedly go at any time. The other two hikers can’t ‘cuz they’re guys. source

World: Was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad an assassination target today?

Despite claims that it was actually a grenade that exploded here, the Iranian government is standing firm that it was just fireworks. No Ahmadinejads were harmed. source

World: Iran sanctions: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad needs a dustbin, stat

  • I gave one of the [world powers] a message that the resolutions you issue are like a used handkerchief which should be thrown in the dustbin.
  • Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Talking all big and stuff after major sanctions were put on his country by the UN. What do the sanctions (the fourth set put on the country) do? Well, they allow the UN to prevent the tools for making nuclear devices from entering the country, specifically targeting the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who have been known to create front companies. Beyond that, though, it also blocks Iran from buying heavy weapons like helicopters and attack missiles, and stiffens restrictions on both banks and certain individuals. That’s one fairly solid handkerchief Ahmadinejad just threw away. Or is it? source

World: Weird camera angle + Mahmoud Ahmadinejad = Six months in jail

They’re not really kissing. Still, Newsweek reporter Maziar Bahari got an extra six months in jail (plus 13 for covering Iran protests) for this photo that landed on his Facebook page. source

World: Ahmadinejad has delusions of making a nuclear deal with the West

  • There are some talks under way over the nuclear fuel swap. The case is not yet closed … we have already announced that we are ready for a fuel exchange within a fair framework.
  • Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Regarding hopes for a nuclear fuel swap despite the fact that they had already started enriching uranium. Iran already missed their chance; the UN’s deal required other countries to enrich the fuel for Iran so that it wasn’t at a high enough grade for them to build weapons. The chance that they’ll be sanctioned is pretty dang high. source

World: Iran enriches uranium, God cheers, the rest of the world jeers

  • I would like to notify you and announce with a loud voice that – thank God – our chief nuclear negotiator announced that the produce of fuel at 20% started under the watchful eye of our scientists.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Announcing to a crowd that the country that sent worms to space is now enriching uranium at levels high enough to build their own reactors. He notes that they could enrich as high as 80 percent, but they have no need. 20 percent is high enough to anger the West. source
